APP 2Q26 First Take: a name that usually beats and raises posted a rare miss. Revenue came in below estimates, and the Q3 guide offered no upside vs. buy-side expectations. This aligns with recent chatter that ad ROAS has softened, prompting investors to reassess the competitive setup and de-risk first.
On the slowdown drivers, prior channel checks suggest game ads share was flat, trailing share gains at Unity but still broadly stable. The revenue miss may thus reflect a slower-than-planned e-comm push; the call should shed more light.
Details:
Details below.1) Revenue decelerated: Q2 revenue grew 53% YoY, continuing to slow on a higher base in the core software trend. For 2H, management guided revenue of $2.06–2.09bn, with a midpoint implying ~47% YoY, which does not yet show incremental lift from the June launch of the self-serve e-comm ad platform.
2) Profit optimization likely peaked: OP margin was 84% in Q2, posting the first QoQ decline, and guidance points to near-term margin pressure. This may reflect a timing mismatch around spends and R&D recognition ahead of the self-serve rollout, and with OP already at 84%, further upside appears limited.
3) Buybacks continued steadily: in Q2 the company repurchased $550mn, cancelling 1.1mn shares at an avg. price of $500 per share, with pace easing vs. Q4. $AppLovin(APP.US)
