The print landed in the after-hours window. Heading into the report, sentiment was muted. Co-CEO remarks at the BBG Screentime conference in late Sep that growth was 'too slow,' plus last week's layoffs and a Chief Content Officer transition, amplified uncertainty. **Results were still weak.** EPS slightly beat, but quality was poor given low bars and timing mismatches in costs and revenue. More importantly, Q4 guidance missed even ex-layoff charges, failing to shore up near-term confidence. **Specifically:** Key points follow. **1) Guide missed:** With low confidence and modest set-up, guidance mattered more. Q4 revenue is guided to $13.4bn, with growth flat vs. Q3. OP of $3.5bn was 6% below consensus, mainly on severance (Oct 14: 1,000+ roles, ~6%). Even adding back the sub-$0.2bn charge, OP still missed. **Notably, full-year ad revenue is now guided to $2.7bn, below the previously confident $3.0bn.** Ads are a key pillar for growth expectations and valuation, so this will likely keep risk appetite subdued. **2) Growth kept slowing:** Q3 revenue grew 12% YoY, or 11% on an FX-neutral basis. High comps played a role, but a softer content pipeline and slower-than-expected ad growth also weighed. Q3 price hikes were centered in core Europe (UK, Germany, Austria, etc.). However, the quarter’s uplift still leaned on U.S. pricing effects. **3) Margin pressure persists:** Q3 OP was $6.8bn with OPM of 53%, up nearly 700bps YoY. That uplift was largely base effects, last year’s one-off Brazil tax, and timing mismatches in operating expenses this quarter. Q4 includes severance, so efficiency gains will be hard to see near term. With a new Chief Content Officer, initial moves could ramp content spend (cross-licensing, more originals, direct M&A), offsetting headcount savings. **4) FCF guide cut:** Full-year FCF was lowered by $0.5bn to $12.0bn, mainly due to a Q4 real-estate transaction. Q3 buybacks were $4.8bn, well above historical levels, with $22.3bn remaining authorization. Buybacks totaled $10.8bn in the first three quarters, exceeding $9.5bn of FCF, implying cash balances are being drawn. If Q4 runs at a similar pace, full-year 2026 shareholder yield would be ~5%, which could provide some support on pullbacks. Given future investment needs, further upping the pace looks unlikely to us. **5) Earnings call transcript:** see '[**Netflix (Trans): Ad growth 80%+, U.S. content needs a lift**](https://longbridge.cn/topics/44444943?channel=SH000001&invite-code=355628&app_id=longbridge&utm_source=longbridge_app_share&locale=zh-CN&share_track_id=bee079cc-2543-4e60-97d7-29fced337565)'. Reference for more color. **6) Key metrics at a glance** Highlights summarized below. **Dolphin Research View** Our stance is outlined below. **Last quarter, we argued:** Q2 played out a bearish script of 'late-cycle content + price-hike backlash.' A turn would require better leading user data, but Q3’s slate was not strong enough, so near-term user recovery needed monitoring. Indeed, Q3 user trends did not recover, and the market now worries about erosion in Netflix’s long-term brand strength. That concern has grown. **On the past half-year of weak engagement (flat/down viewing hours), management said:** they are focused and taking actions, citing India where more live variety content and a superfans plan drove growth. From user feedback on Q3 price hikes in some markets (UK, Germany, Austria, etc.), brand perception remains stable. **Meanwhile, the ad guide cut dented growth confidence.** As streaming price-hike logic weakens under competition, ads were seen as the incremental engine. The company attributed the shortfall to its ad tech and product not keeping pace, and R&D spend suggests ad-tech investment has not eased. **We have cautioned not to over-rotate on Netflix ads.** Netflix opted for a 1P stack and must build the ad ecosystem from the ground up. Brand ads also lag performance ads given today’s environment and industry trends. **We think growth expectations are now on the pessimistic side and partly priced in.** At ~$270bn post-market, forward P/E is ~19x (we cut 2027 OP consensus by 7%, now modeling ~10% profit growth), roughly back to pandemic-era multiples. In this setup, any credible catalyst could lift the stock. **With ads light and total revenue inline, the flip side is that subs held up despite a non-blockbuster Q3 slate (few tentpole English titles), suggesting a floor for subscription stickiness.** Near term, Q4 is seasonally strong and the slate looks solid, with several major IP sequels/finales, an NFL debut on Thanksgiving Eve, an NFL Christmas double-header, and live boxing. Downside to the near-term multiple should be limited. **The issue is durability. To base and then rally sustainably, headlines alone are insufficient and near- to mid-term fundamentals are not yet a firm backstop:** More is needed to cement the trend. First, competition from YouTube and others persists (Nielsen shows Netflix share erosion has not stabilized while YouTube expands). That pressure remains. Second, to re-accelerate, under the new CCO (ex-Fox/Disney exec Peter Rice), the company will likely step up spend in reality, games, and live, or pursue partnerships like with France’s TF1. Long term this is right, but near term it could add profit pressure. **Thus our stance remains cautiously optimistic:** We stay balanced but constructive. **On a 3-year view, with cord-cutting intact and confidence in management’s execution, Netflix can regain clear leadership in streaming.** Today’s multiple likely sits below steady-state. **But over the next 1–2 years, the growth path is not clear, and spend/efficiency mismatches could pressure profits, weighing on returns.** From a risk-reward lens, phased, small positions make sense at the lower end of the range with buybacks and a Q4 seasonality trade, but it is not yet a high-conviction bet. \ This marks the conclusion. **Dolphin Research 'Netflix' archive** Recent pieces are shown below. **Earnings season** (recent) See links for details.
