# MTR CORPORATION plans to introduce 30 electric buses by the end of 2026 and will conduct research on hydrogen-powered light rail within the year

> MTR CORPORATION plans to introduce 30 electric buses by the end of 2026 to replace existing diesel buses. The company also hopes to start research on hydrogen light rail within this year. MTR is committed to integrating environmental protection and low-carbon elements into the railway network, aiming to halve greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Legislative Council members support MTR in accelerating its pace, noting that mainland China's new energy vehicles are already mature and cost-effective. MTR stated that it will consider factors such as green hydrogen supply and high-platform hydrogen trains in determining its next steps

According to the VETEK Finance APP, Hong Kong is promoting green transportation. MTR Corporation (00066) Chief Executive Officer Yang Meizhen stated that the company plans to introduce 30 electric buses by the end of 2026 to replace existing diesel buses. Some Legislative Council members hope that MTR Corporation can accelerate its pace.

Yang Meizhen mentioned that MTR Corporation is committed to integrating environmental protection and low-carbon elements into the planning, design, construction, and daily operation of the railway network, with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by half by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Legislative Council member (Engineering sector) Lu Weiguo expressed that mainland China's new energy vehicles, including single-deck and double-deck buses, are quite mature, with prices becoming increasingly affordable. Therefore, he supports MTR Corporation's transition in this area and hopes that the pace can be accelerated.

Yang Meizhen also stated that MTR Corporation hopes to initiate research on hydrogen-powered light rail within this year, including data collection and experience gathering. It is expected that the research work will take several months, followed by further research on long-term development. She mentioned that MTR Corporation plans to research low-floor hydrogen-powered light rail, while the company has recently replaced a new batch of high-floor light rail, and it is expected that the lifespan of the trains will continue for some time. MTR Corporation will consider factors such as green hydrogen supply and the possibility of high-floor hydrogen trains in the future before deciding on the next steps.

Hong Kong Policy Research Institute's Tian Beichen is concerned about whether MTR Corporation is collaborating with mainland manufacturers to retrofit light rail to be hydrogen-powered and continue to operate with high floors. Yang Meizhen responded that the technical and cost-effectiveness challenges involved in retrofitting are significant, but MTR Corporation will keep relevant possibilities open.

MTR Corporation's Chief of Operations Engineering Services and Innovation, Chen Qingqiang, mentioned that the development of hydrogen in rail transportation is still in the early stages. Challenges include the complex road environment in Hong Kong, and MTR Corporation needs to study the supporting facilities to ensure the proper handling of industry, supply, storage, transportation, and personnel training
