The Lannach site was intended to be a hub for electric mobility but is now facing challenges, including the closure of the Roitzsch plant in Germany, affecting 250 jobs. Additionally, Jaguar is halting production of two models at Magna Steyr until 2027, and Ineos has postponed the launch of its electric vehicle. Magna Powertrain has been building transmissions and all-wheel drives for years. Lannach was planned as a central hub for electric mobility, where the company would, among other things, build motors for Fisker.But that is no longer the case, as the latter has filed for insolvency. Lannach is still producing electric motors for the electric Mercedes-Benz G-Class, which is manufactured by Magna Steyr, a sister company in Graz. However, no further orders are currently foreseeable. There were already signs of the crisis. Last year, managers and engineers were advised to leave the company. And it’s not just at the Lannach site that Magna Powertrain is struggling. The plant’s closure in Roitzsch near Bitterfeld in Germany, where the company produces all-wheel drive transmissions for luxury cars with combustion engines, has already been decided. A total of 250 employees will lose their jobs. And Magna has even more problems in Europe. Jaguar is phasing out the production of two models at Magna Steyr in Graz this year, namely the compact SUV E-Pace with combustion engine and its electric counterpart I-Pace. Jaguar does not plan to resume production at Magna Steyr until 2027.
