# The Hong Kong International Airport's third runway system was put into operation on November 28. Huang Weilun: It will help Hong Kong become a stronger aviation hub

According to news from the Hong Kong Airport Authority on November 5, the Hong Kong International Airport's three-runway system is set to be operational by November 28, 2024. Once the Hong Kong Airport Authority receives the airport license and the three-runway system is activated, all three runways will be fully operational. Hong Kong's Acting Financial Secretary Paul Chan stated at the opening ceremony of the "Super Hub Expo" that once the three-runway system is in service, it is expected to handle 120 million passengers and 10 million tons of cargo annually. The benefits brought by the three-runway system will be significant, allowing Hong Kong to become a stronger aviation hub and better serve other regions in the area.

He also mentioned that currently, Hong Kong Airport connects to nearly 200 destinations worldwide, and the authorities are working to expand the aviation network, actively reaching out to countries along the "Belt and Road" initiative, including those in the Middle East, to establish new aviation partnerships and markets. Additionally, the Hong Kong Airport Authority is striving to expand its service scope, including collaborating with Dongguan City to build a logistics park locally, enabling efficient transshipment of goods in the Greater Bay Area and utilizing Hong Kong's aviation network. The first phase of the permanent facility project is expected to be completed by the end of next year, handling 1 million tons of cargo annually.

Paul Chan mentioned that Cathay Pacific Airways (00293) is an airline headquartered in Hong Kong with a strong global influence. Cathay Pacific recently announced that it will invest over HKD 100 billion in the next seven years to purchase multiple aircraft, further enhancing passenger experience and leveraging the three-runway system to strengthen Hong Kong's position as an international aviation hub. **He indicated that the authorities expect more airlines to utilize the three-runway system to launch new services and expand existing ones.**

Regarding the passenger facilities of the three-runway system, the Hong Kong Airport Authority stated that it will work with business partners to prepare for the phased opening of the expanded Terminal 2 starting at the end of 2025.
