White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that "the ball is in China’s court" and emphasized that China needs the American consumer. This comes amid escalating trade tensions, with China recently raising tariffs on U.S. goods to 125% in retaliation to U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports, which have reached 145%. By Jeff Mason WASHINGTON, April 15 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump is open to making a trade deal with China but Beijing should make the first move, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday. “The ball is in China’s court: China needs to make a deal with us, we don’t have to make a deal with them,” Leavitt told a press briefing, saying Trump had given her that statement directly in an Oval Office meeting to use. “China wants what we have … the American consumer, or to put another way, they need our money,” Leavitt said. China raised its tariffs on imports of U.S. goods to 125% on Friday in a retaliatory move to Trump, who effectively raised U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods to 145%, while putting a pause on planned levies for other countries’ goods. Trump has described Chinese President Xi Jinping in admiring terms, but neither man has backed down in an escalating trade war between their two countries. “The president, again, has made it quite clear that he’s open to a deal with China. But China needs to make a deal with the United States of America,” Leavitt said. Trump has said he expects something positive to come out of the trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies. But, unlike multiple other nations who have responded to his plans for tariffs by seeking deals with Washington, Beijing has raised its own levies on U.S. goods and not sought talks. ### Related Stocks - [BALL.US - Ball](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/BALL.US.md) ## Related News & Research | Title | Description | URL | |-------|-------------|-----| | Auranova Announces Closing of Private Placement of Common Shares | Auranova Resources Inc. has successfully closed a non-brokered private placement, issuing 2,858,020 common shares at $0. | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276494659.md) | | FCA Fines Seven Social Media Influencers For Promoting Unauthorised Foreign Exchange Trading Scheme | FCA:FCA: SEVEN SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS FINED FOR THEIR ROLE IN PROMOTION OF UNAUTHORISED FOREIGN EXCHANGE TRADING SCHEM | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276475280.md) | | Fibonacci’s 61.8% in Gold - Third Time Not-So-Lucky | Fibonacci’s 61.8% in Gold - Third Time Not-So-Lucky | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276474128.md) | | 13:30 ETInventHelp Inventors Develop New Product for Concrete Companies (TLS-1086) | InventHelp has developed a new product called the DUAL POWERED EXTRACTION VAC, designed to efficiently move concrete fro | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276474466.md) | | Trump Plans New Across-the-Board Tariff on Trading Partners | Trump Plans New Across-the-Board Tariff on Trading Partners | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276475475.md) | --- > **Disclaimer**: This article is for reference only and does not constitute any investment advice.
