CATL (SHE: 300750) and BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY) remained the world's two largest electric vehicle (EV) battery makers in the first quarter. Global EV battery usage in the January-March period totaled 221.8 GWh, up 38.8 percent from 159.8 GWh in the same period last year, according to data released today by South Korean market researcher SNE Research. CATL installed 84.9 GWh of EV batteries in January-March, up 40.2 percent from 60.6 GWh in the same period last year. The Chinese power battery giant continued to rank first in the world with a 38.3 percent share in the January-March period, and remained the only battery supplier in the world with a market share of more than 30 percent. This is higher than its January-March 2024 share of 37.9 percent and slightly higher than its January-February 2025 share of 38.2 percent. BYD's EV battery installations were 37.0 GWh in January-March, up 62.0 percent from 22.8 GWh in the same period last year. The company ranked second in the January-March period with a 16.7 percent share, up from 14.3 percent in the January-March 2024 period but slightly lower than the 16.9 percent in the January-February 2025 period. LG Energy Solution's installed volume was 23.8 GWh in the January-March period, up 15.1 percent year-on-year. The South Korean company continued to rank third in the January-March period with a 10.7 percent share, down from 12.9 percent a year earlier but up from 9.8 percent in the January-February 2025 period. South Korea's SK On was fourth with a 4.7 percent share, China's CALB was fifth with a 3.9 percent share, and Gotion High-tech was sixth with a 3.5 percent share. South Korea's Samsung SDI, Japan's Panasonic, China's Eve Energy, and Svolt Energy ranked seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth, respectively, with shares of 3.3 percent, 3.3 percent, 2.6 percent, and 2.5 percent in the January-March period.
