CEO Volker Schmidt highlighted the challenges of transitioning 2,300 VW employees to Rheinmetall, despite overlaps in the automotive and defense sectors. Rheinmetall's CEO indicated that Osnabrück remains a potential site for expansion, although discussions with Volkswagen have not yielded concrete results. OSNABRÜCK (dpa-AFX) – The Niedersachsenmetall Employers' Association is calling on the state government to advocate for the defense contractor Rheinmetall to set up operations at the Volkswagen site in Osnabrück. "The state government should do everything in its power to attract Rheinmetall to Osnabrück," chief executive Volker Schmidt told the German Press Agency. The plant, which employs around 2,300 people, is facing closure: Production of the Porsche models built there is scheduled to end in 2026, with manufacturing of the VW T-Roc Cabrio set to cease by mid-2027. So far, no follow-up orders have been secured. Schmidt emphasized the need for realism: "It is questionable whether Rheinmetall could simply take on 2,300 VW employees." Common Ground with the Defense Industry While there are significant overlaps, Schmidt noted, "A number of automotive suppliers are already trying to expand their product portfolios towards defense or medical technology. But the jobs we lose in the automotive industry cannot be compensated for one-to-one." Rheinmetall CEO Armin Papperger stated in July that Osnabrück remained "in play" should additional capacity be required. A Rheinmetall delegation visited the site in March. Volkswagen subsequently described the talks as an "open-ended discussion" without any concrete outcomes. The debate over Osnabrück comes at a time when Rheinmetall is looking to expand overall – including talks about a possible acquisition of the Lürssen military shipyards in Bremen. ### Related Stocks - [VWAPY.US - Volkswagen](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/VWAPY.US.md) - [VWAGY.US - Volkswagen](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/VWAGY.US.md) ## Related News & Research | Title | Description | URL | |-------|-------------|-----| | Volkswagen Mulls 20% Company-wide Cost Reduction by 2028-End | Volkswagen Mulls 20% Company-wide Cost Reduction by 2028-End | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276044410.md) | | Volkswagen to Reportedly Face Trial Amid Alleged Diesel Emission Deceit in 2027 | Volkswagen to Reportedly Face Trial Amid Alleged Diesel Emission Deceit in 2027 | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276004836.md) | | Volkswagen Says Launch of Criminal Proceedings in France over Diesel Issue 'Inadmissible' | Volkswagen Says Launch of Criminal Proceedings in France over Diesel Issue 'Inadmissible' | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276070174.md) | | Volkswagen says commitment to transformation unchanged after Trump climate repeal | BERLIN, Feb 13 (Reuters) - Volkswagen remains committed to its course towards more efficient and low-emission vehicles i | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/275899185.md) | | Sovereign Metals Says Project Vault Participant Traxys Signs Offtake MoU | Sovereign Metals Ltd :PROJECT VAULT PARTICIPANT TRAXYS SIGNS OFFTAKE MOU FOR KASIYA GRAPHITEMOU TARGETS 40,000 TONNES PE | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276080934.md) | --- > **Disclaimer**: This article is for reference only and does not constitute any investment advice.
