# Alphabet invests £5 billion in the UK to develop AI projects

> Alphabet announced that it will invest £5 billion in AI projects in the UK over the next two years, primarily for infrastructure and scientific research. This investment is one of several large-scale investments announced ahead of U.S. President Trump's state visit. Alphabet will also inaugurate the Waltham Cross large data center, valued at $1 billion, on the 16th in collaboration with Chancellor of the Exchequer, Li Yunqing, to expand its business in the UK and provide funding for DeepMind. Google President Ruth Porat stated that the UK offers significant opportunities in advanced sciences and emphasized the special technological relationship between the U.S. and the UK

Alphabet (GOOGL.US) announced an investment of £5 billion in the UK AI sector for infrastructure and scientific research over the next two years, which is one of several large-scale investments announced before U.S. President Trump’s state visit to the UK.

Alphabet will open a large data center in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, valued at $1 billion, with Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt on Tuesday (16th). This investment will expand the company's operations in the UK and also provide funding for DeepMind, headquartered in London.

Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Google, stated that the UK offers significant opportunities for Google's pioneering work in advanced sciences, noting that there is currently a special technological relationship between the U.S. and the UK, but joint efforts are still needed to mitigate some downside risks.

There are concerns globally about the energy usage of data centers and their environmental impact. Porat stated that Google remains committed to building renewable energy, and energy efficiency is being integrated into all aspects of AI microchips, models, and data centers
