The EU plans to charge Meta for failing to properly remove illegal content, which could result in a fine of 6% of global revenue
The European Union is preparing to formally accuse Meta (META.US) of failing to adequately regulate illegal content on its platforms Facebook and Instagram, in violation of the EU's Digital Services Act (DSA), and could face fines of up to 6% of its global annual revenue.
According to informed sources, the European Commission will announce preliminary investigation results in the coming weeks, indicating that Meta lacks effective reporting and handling mechanisms that allow users to flag and request the removal of illegal posts. Meta can propose remedial measures or defend itself before the formal penalties take effect.
Meta spokesperson Ben Walters stated that the company disagrees with any claims of violating the Digital Services Act and is currently in discussions with EU officials
