This decision follows Buffett's announcement in May about his retirement as CEO while remaining chairman. The board's vote to formalize this separation was filed with the SEC, ensuring Buffett's continued leadership as chairman after Abel takes over. By Connor Hart Berkshire Hathaway said it has amended its bylaws to separate the roles of chairman and CEO, paving the way for Greg Abel to succeed Warren Buffett as top officer, effective Jan. 1. The formal separation comes after Buffett shocked the investing world in May, stating at the conglomerate's annual meeting that he planned to retire as chief executive at the end of the year. Berkshire said at that time the legendary investor would remain chairman of its board. The Omaha, Neb., company's board earlier this week voted to amend its bylaws to distinguish the two top roles, according to a Friday filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. This separation will allow Buffett, who has run Berkshire since 1965, to remain chairman of the board once Abel takes over as CEO next year.
