The food and beverage sector led the gains, with Nestlé's stock price soaring more than 9% after announcing a layoff plan. The UK FTSE 100 index closed up 11 points, an increase of 0.1%, at 9,436 points. The German DAX index closed up 90 points, an increase of 0.4%, at 24,272 points. The French CAC 40 index closed up 111 points, an increase of 1.4%, at 8,188 points
