# The divergence is too great, Hungary's "Tepp Conference" has been canceled, and Trump said he "doesn't want to waste time."

This time, the "Trump-Putin meeting" fell through.

On October 22, according to Global Times, U.S. Secretary of State Rubio spoke with Lavrov on the 20th local time. However, sources revealed that U.S. officials believe that after the call between Rubio and Lavrov, **Russia's position has not moved beyond its "extremist stance" and has not made sufficient progress.**

Currently, it is unlikely that Rubio will suggest a meeting between Putin and Trump next week, but Rubio and Lavrov may speak again this week. Sources indicate that Rubio and Lavrov **have differing expectations regarding Russia potentially halting its "invasion" of Ukraine.**

Additionally, recent media reports confirmed that the White House announced on Tuesday that the meeting between Trump and Putin aimed at ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict has been canceled.

A White House official stated, "Secretary Rubio had a productive call with Foreign Minister Lavrov. Therefore, there is no need for an additional face-to-face meeting between the Secretary and the Foreign Minister." They added, "President Trump currently has no plans to meet with President Putin in the near future."

Trump directly indicated that he does not want to "waste time." On Tuesday afternoon, when asked about the meeting in the Oval Office, Trump stated:

> **I don't want to have a meeting that is a waste of time, so I will see what happens.**

However, according to CCTV News, Trump claimed he has not yet made a decision regarding a meeting with Putin. Trump also stated that he still believes there is a chance for a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

This dramatic shift comes just five days after Trump announced a potential meeting with Putin, exposing the fragility of peace negotiations. Reports indicate that after a call with Putin last Thursday, Trump stated, "The two agreed to hold a high-level advisory meeting next week, which will be initially hosted by Secretary Rubio and other designated officials."

## Ceasefire Proposal May Become Main Issue

The core issue of the negotiations lies in the specific conditions for a ceasefire. According to media reports, after a "tense atmosphere" meeting with Ukrainian President Zelensky, Trump publicly called for both Russia and Ukraine to cease fire and freeze the current front lines.

This position has garnered support from Ukraine and several European countries. Zelensky, along with the leaders of France, the UK, Germany, Italy, and the President of the European Commission, issued a joint statement on Tuesday supporting the use of "the current contact line as a starting point for negotiations," rather than demanding that Kyiv cede more territory to Moscow.

However, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov explicitly rejected the proposal for an immediate ceasefire on Tuesday, stating that it contradicts the understandings reached during previous meetings in Alaska.

## Confusing Signals from All Parties, Uncertain Outlook

Before and after the summit was officially canceled, the signals released by the relevant parties were quite confusing, reflecting the high uncertainty of the current situation. Trump himself retained the possibility of a meeting after the White House announced the cancellation, contrasting with the clear statements from White House officials.

There are also subtle differences in the statements from the Russian side. Kremlin spokesman Peskov emphasized the complexity of the meeting's preparatory work, while the president of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, Dmitriev, stated on social media that the media misinterpreted the meaning of a meeting between the Russian and U.S. leaders in the "near future," and emphasized that preparatory work is still ongoing
