# General Motors releases "Eyes Off" autonomous driving technology and in-vehicle system equipped with Google's "Conversational" artificial intelligence

The day after releasing a strong financial report, General Motors (GM) further showcased its technological strength by launching several new products, including the "eyes-off" autonomous driving feature, a conversational artificial intelligence (AI) developed with Google technology, and a device called "cobot" — this robot will assist General Motors in assembling future models.

At an event held in New York City, General Motors announced plans to add the "eyes-off" feature to its existing Super Cruise hands-free driving software. GM stated that this upgrade will significantly enhance convenience and safety.

Sterling Anderson, General Motors' Chief Product Officer, revealed that 23 models are currently equipped with the Super Cruise system. The upgraded hands-free version of Super Cruise will first be applied in highway driving scenarios, gradually expanding to urban roads, ultimately enabling vehicles to autonomously complete errands (such as short-distance deliveries and errands).

Anderson stated, "This feature will win back valuable time for consumers... It will change the way people live."

While adding the "eyes-off" feature to Super Cruise is a relatively easy upgrade, elevating the system to Level 3 Autonomy is a more significant breakthrough — Level 3 Autonomy means that the vehicle can handle most driving tasks independently, requiring the driver to take over only when necessary. General Motors previously revealed that it is collaborating with Nvidia (NVDA) to provide technical support for its upcoming Level 3 autonomous driving products.

General Motors stated that the "eyes-off" version of Super Cruise will first be equipped in the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ electric vehicle, with plans to gradually roll it out to other models.

Mary Barra, General Motors' CEO, stated at the event, "The rollout of this feature will be much faster than that of the (standard) Super Cruise."

General Motors previously operated the "Cruise" autonomous taxi service but ultimately chose to shut it down due to the high costs and uncertainties associated with scaling the service. GM stated that it is currently applying the software technology and experience from the Cruise project to new product development, focusing on personal autonomous driving rather than commercial autonomous driving.

Another major announcement from General Motors focused on its in-car AI system. Dave Richardson, Senior Vice President of Software Engineering at General Motors, introduced that starting in 2026, GM vehicles will be equipped with "conversational AI powered by Google Gemini," allowing users to interact with the vehicle via voice for function control, route suggestions, and even assistance in preparing for interviews Richardson previously worked at Apple (stock code: AAPL), responsible for the development of consumer software products. He pointed out that this technology integration will "allow users to achieve more natural conversational interactions while driving and receive more practical suggestions."

General Motors stated that it will also develop its own artificial intelligence products independent of Gemini in the future. This next-generation in-car AI will be "tailored for the vehicle" and optimized based on vehicle performance and driver personal preferences, while relying on the OnStar system for connectivity.

General Motors claims that this future AI product can achieve multiple functions, such as: alerting vehicle malfunctions and rerouting to a repair center, or guiding the driver on how to operate specific functions (such as single-pedal driving mode) while using the vehicle.

In addition, General Motors announced that its upcoming pure electric vehicles will feature bidirectional charging capabilities—using the vehicle's large-capacity battery, pure electric vehicles can serve as backup power sources for homes, businesses, and the grid.

Currently, some of General Motors' pure electric vehicles (such as the Silverado EV) already have bidirectional charging capabilities, but the company plans to launch a more comprehensive product lineup to support the installation and use of charging facilities in home and commercial scenarios.

Finally, General Motors revealed that it is collaborating with its robotics technology center in Michigan to develop robots—referred to as "cobots." These robots will assist factory workers and are set to be deployed in General Motors' factories this year
