This advertisement is disrupting one of the largest bilateral trade relationships in the world.** Before Trump posted the above content on the "Truth Social" platform, both the U.S. and Canada had publicly debated the advertisement for several days. The advertisement cited former U.S. President Ronald Reagan's free trade stance, which triggered dissatisfaction from the current President Trump. On Saturday, Trump stated, "Given Canada's serious distortion of facts and hostile actions, I have decided to impose an additional 10% tariff on top of the current tariff payments to Canada." Currently, Canada is subject to a 35% base tariff rate from the U.S., and the impact of Trump's new measure remains unclear. Due to exemptions under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), the 35% rate does not apply to most Canadian goods. Steel and aluminum products do not enjoy this exemption, while Canadian-made cars and trucks only partially qualify for exemptions from the 25% tariff Trump imposes on most foreign cars. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has been engaged in long-term negotiations with the U.S. to lower tariffs. Ontario Premier Doug Ford stated on Friday that after talks with Carney, the province would suspend its advertising campaign in the U.S. on Monday, hoping to restart negotiations. This controversy has once again raised uncertainty between the two trading partners. Last year, the bilateral trade in goods and services between the U.S. and Canada reached $900 billion, with the supply chains of major industries in both countries highly intertwined. President Trump announced on Thursday that he would terminate all negotiations with Canada regarding the advertisement. The advertisement quoted a segment from a speech by Reagan in 1987, where Reagan defended free trade and criticized tariffs as an outdated concept. When this latest statement was released, Trump was en route to Asia for a three-nation visit, which includes attending the ASEAN summit in Malaysia and the APEC summit in South Korea. When asked if he planned to meet with Carney during the two summits, Trump stated before his departure, "I have no such plans, and I will not meet." After Trump first suspended negotiations, Carney had previously stated that Ottawa was willing to restart dialogue "when the U.S. is ready," and noted that progress had been made in negotiations regarding steel, aluminum, and energy. Trump's tariff policy has severely impacted the Canadian economy—last year, about three-quarters of Canada's export goods were sent to the U.S. Ontario, with a population of about 16 million, is at the core of this trade war, as its steel and automotive industries are targeted sectors for Trump's import taxes ## Related News & Research - [Trump threatens to hit Iran 'extremely hard' over next two to three weeks](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281445712.md) - [Here's How Much $100 Invested In abrdn Physical Silver Shares ETF 10 Years Ago Would Be Worth Today](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281394387.md) - [Destiny Tech100 Stock Rises After SpaceX IPO Rumors](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281415250.md) - [BREAKINGVIEWS-SpaceX IPO will gauge market moxie more than depth](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281406751.md) - [Fired via email?
