The U.S. International Trade Commission stated that it will investigate the Apple Watch to determine whether it still infringes on Masimo's patents related to blood oxygen measurement technology. Reports also indicate that these Apple Watches have been redesigned to circumvent a previous import ban issued by the Commission. The regulatory agency is expected to complete the investigation within six months. Reports state that Apple claims the lawsuit is baseless and aims to prevent the launch of its smartwatch's blood oxygen detection feature, alleging that Masimo filed the lawsuit by copying the design of the Apple Watch. The two companies have been embroiled in legal disputes on multiple fronts. Last Friday, a federal court jury in California ruled that Apple infringed on a patent held by Masimo, subsequently awarding Masimo $634 million in damages. In 2023, the Commission banned the import of Apple's Series 9 and Ultra 2 smartwatches after finding that Masimo's patents were infringed. Apple subsequently removed the blood oxygen detection technology from its watches to avoid the impact of the ban. In August, Apple introduced a redesigned "blood oxygen" feature for some Apple Watch Series 9, Series 10, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 users through software updates for the iPhone and Apple Watch.
