# Swiss Economic Minister: U.S. tariffs on Switzerland may be reduced to 15% in early December

Swiss Economic Minister Guy Parmelin stated in an interview with Swiss German Broadcasting Corporation (SRF) aired on Saturday that the 39% ordinary tariff imposed by the United States on Swiss imports may be reduced to 15% by early December.

"Switzerland is ready, and the United States needs a little more time. I hope everything can be smoothly implemented by early December, and we are actively promoting this matter," Parmelin told SRF.

Earlier, on Tuesday (November 18), Parmelin mentioned in an interview that the government expects the reduced tariff to take 10 to 12 working days to be incorporated into the system, but he did not provide a specific effective date at that time.

On November 14, Switzerland and the United States reached a preliminary agreement to reduce the tariff to 15%. Prior to this, for more than three months, U.S. President Donald Trump had imposed a 39% tariff on Switzerland, which is the highest rate among all European countries.

Parmelin revealed to SRF that after the preliminary agreement was reached, both parties would soon start detailed negotiations. He stated that in addition to the exemptions already obtained for the proposed 15% ordinary tariff, Switzerland might have the opportunity to seek more exemption rights.

"We cannot forget that we can also make some demands... For example, in this area, we can express our hope to obtain more exemptions. We believe that the currently determined (tariff level) still has room for reduction," he said
