# Due to the regulatory authorities initiating a new investigation, Google has withdrawn its antitrust complaint against Microsoft in the EU

According to Zhitong Finance APP, Google (GOOG.US, GOOGL.US) announced on Friday that it has withdrawn its antitrust complaint against Microsoft's (MSFT.US) cloud computing business to the European Commission. This move comes after the EU formally launched a new round of investigation into Microsoft's cloud services under the Digital Markets Act (DMA).

Google submitted the complaint to the European Commission in September 2024, accusing Microsoft of adopting unfair licensing policies in its Azure cloud computing service. However, earlier this month, EU regulators initiated a formal investigation into the market power of Microsoft and Amazon (AMZN.US) in the cloud computing sector, prompting Google to withdraw its complaint.

Under the framework of the Digital Markets Act, the EU has launched three investigations. The first two will assess whether Amazon AWS and Microsoft Azure should be classified as "gatekeepers" in the cloud computing sector, serving as important digital service gateways between businesses and consumers. Notably, these two services have not yet reached the scale, user numbers, and market position thresholds set by the DMA, but regulators still believe it is necessary to further examine their influence.

The third investigation will focus on whether the DMA is sufficient to address anti-competitive or unfair business practices in the cloud computing industry. The European Commission pointed out that the investigation will include interoperability barriers between cloud services, restrictions or conditional limitations on enterprise users' access to data, service bundling, and potential asymmetries in contract terms.

According to market research firm Synergy Research, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google collectively hold about 70% of the European cloud computing market share, indicating a high level of industry concentration.

The European Commission plans to complete the investigations within 12 months and publish a final report within 18 months. If Amazon or Microsoft is determined to be a "gatekeeper" and in violation of DMA regulations, the two companies will have six months to rectify the situation to ensure their cloud computing businesses comply with regulatory requirements.

This series of regulatory actions marks an escalation in the EU's scrutiny of the competitive landscape, technological barriers, and data control in the cloud computing industry, which may have far-reaching implications for the business strategies of the three tech giants in the European market
