<div id="readability-page-1"><div><p><span>(Platts)--15Dec2025/435 pm EST/2135 GMT          **Plant provides 10% of California's electricity, 20% of clean energy     **PG&amp;E agrees to protect 12,000 acres through conservation measures     The California Coastal Commission has approved Pacific Gas &amp; Electric's request to continue operating the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant in San Luis Obispo County to 2030.     The vote took place at the Coastal Commission's monthly meeting Dec. 11. The utility is now waiting for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve the extended operation of its two generating units at Diablo Canyon, with a total capacity of 2.2 GW.     The state's only remaining nuclear power plant was scheduled to shut permanently by 2025 to comply with state-mandated protections of marine biological resources. However, the state legislature voted in 2018 to extend its operation to 2030, citing the need for firm power resources. Governor Gavin Newsom signed SB 846 approving the extension.     State regulators took the action following a heat wave in 2020 along with new demand projections from the California Energy Commission requiring increased reliability and increasing needs for energy supplies, including for new data centers and growing industries.     Diablo Canyon provides about 10% of California's electricity and nearly 20%of its clean energy, according to PG&amp;E. The CEC projects peak electricity demand to grow by more than 20 GW by 2040.     The Coastal Commission's approval came with conditions worked out in collaboration with stakeholders, customers, advocacy groups, elected officials and tribal groups. PG&amp;E has agreed to protect its ownership of 12,000 acres through conservation easements and land transfers in the areas extending from Diablo Canyon's location along the central California coastline.     These conditions are due to PG&amp;E's inability to comply with the State mandate to end once-through cooling of ocean waters. Because of the power plant's clifftop location, it cannot use mitigation compliance choices other power plants have chosen.     PG&amp;E has submitted applications to the NRC for a 20-year extension of the licenses to operate Diablo Canyon's two generating plants to 2044 and 2045.
