The outdoor gear retailer highlighted partnerships that have helped accelerate its climate-friendly activities, including a new 2.5 megawatt community solar project in Woodbury, Minn. being developed by US Solar. This initiative will enable nearly **500** low- to moderate-income households subscribe to renewable energy, lowering utility bills and adding clean power to the grid near REI’s Bloomington, Minn. store. REI also entered a Virtual Power Purchase Agreement with **Carhartt** and other partners, helping renewable energy development in Texas by adding **18.5** megawatts of solar energy to the grid. “When companies come together, climate action becomes more real and more lasting,” said Andrew Dempsey, Director of Sustainability at REI Co-op in a statement. “We’re focused on continuing this work and backing solutions that make a real difference for communities and help keep the outdoors health for the future.” ### **Expanding Support into Educational Programs** As part of the expansion of its work with Sol Systems, REI and the independent power producer support environmental education at Florida Atlantic University’s Pine Jog Center. Through a Community Impact Program, up to **48** high school students will participate in immersive, college-credit-bearing residential programs focused on climate resilience and ecosystem science. Students will get field experience studying South Florida’s wetlands, rivers and coastal ecosystems and have the opportunity to connect with environmental scientists. REI also strengthened its commitment to using recycled materials for its branded products, signing a **three**\-year agreement with Ambercycle to purchase **200** tons per year of the company’s cycora regenerated polyester, which uses recycled textile waste as feedstock to make new, high-quality materials. The retailer has long supported sustainability-related causes, including the use of recycled and upcycled materials and highlighting Climate Neutral certified brands on its website. REI CEO Mary Beth Laughton shared details about the retailer’s **three**\-year strategic plan in September 2025, including prioritizing customer trust, a focused product assortment, elevated service and a revamped membership program. ## Related News & Research - [Acwa Power Says Two Solar Projects on Limited Power Dispatch, to Challenge Grid Operator's Decision](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281543819.md) - [Low investor interest thwarts Greek renewables auctions for Apollo program](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281026571.md) - [5 reasons Trump's war on renewables is a costly mistake right now](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281405589.md) - [Dimension Energy announces closing of $650 million community solar project financing package](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281406038.md) - [Credit to renewable energy sector doubles to ₹10,325 crore in 2025](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281037860.md)
