# Veteran Hong Kong filmmaker Eric Tsang confirms departure as TVB general manager

Veteran filmmaker and television executive Eric Tsang Chi-wai has confirmed he will step down as TVB general manager, bringing an end to months of speculation about his future at Hong Kong’s leading free-to-air broadcaster.\\nThe 72-year-old made the announcement at the TVB Anniversary Awards 2025 ceremony, broadcast live from the Grand Lisboa Palace Resort in Macau on Saturday night.\\nHe made the remarks as he received a specially created “Thousand Stars Glory Legendary Honour Award”.\\nThe trophy was presented by TVB executive chairman Thomas Hui To, with Tsang’s long-time friend, Cantopop singer Alan Tam Wing-lun, handing it over on stage.\\nIn his acceptance speech, Tsang said: “Over the past five years, with everyone’s support, our programmes have been liked and enjoyed by audiences and that has made me the happiest.\\n“Today, I feel I have somewhat run out of ideas and it is time to step down to let the younger generation I’ve worked with carry on to elevate TVB and shoulder this responsibility.”\\n\\nIn a subsequent statement, TVB announced that Tsang would be appointed convenor of a newly established advisory council starting January 21.\\nIn this role, he would advise the board on new content and overall strategic direction, including technology adoption and cross-sector collaboration, to further strengthen TVB’s content ecosystem.\\nPraising Tsang’s contributions, Hui said he had “initiated an important content reform blueprint and, together with multiple internal teams, expanded new programme frontiers”.\\nHe said he looked forward to Tsang continuing to lend his creative vision and strategic insights to strengthen TVB’s innovation and partnership development further.\\nTsang has had a long and deep connection with TVB, spanning decades as an artist, host, actor and later as a senior executive.\\nHis artist contract with the station ended in 2017 after 25 years. He was invited back in January 2021 as a deputy general manager overseeing variety and music production. He was promoted in September of that year to general manager, responsible for major content operations.\\nHis remit covered co-produced dramas, variety formats, music programming, content acquisitions and strategic planning. Rumours of his departure had circulated since November, which Tsang repeatedly denied.\\n
