# "The Big Short" Barry is quietly back in the spotlight with his holdings, firmly maintaining a long-term holding position, related stocks jump over 9%

According to Zhitong Finance APP, as the United States may deepen its role in the Venezuelan energy sector, well-known investor and one of the prototypes for the movie "The Big Short," Michael Burry, stated that he has held shares of Valero Energy (VLO.US) since 2020, and this position is becoming increasingly attractive against the backdrop of the U.S. pushing to revitalize Venezuela's oil industry.

"It needs to be recognized that many refineries along the Gulf Coast were originally designed for Venezuelan heavy crude oil," Burry wrote. "Therefore, they have been operating with less than ideal feedstock for years. Once conditions improve, the margins for jet fuel, asphalt, and diesel will rise over time... I have held Valero since 2020, and after this past weekend, I am even more convinced of my long-term holding idea."

Burry's statement comes after Trump called for U.S. oil companies to increase their investments in Venezuela. Previously, Venezuelan President Maduro was overthrown. As a founding member of OPEC, Venezuela has the largest proven oil reserves in the world, but its crude oil is known for being "heavy and high-sulfur," with only a few refineries globally capable of processing it efficiently.

In this context, Valero Energy is seen as a direct beneficiary due to its strong heavy oil processing capabilities. Burry also pointed out that even if the recovery process for Venezuelan oil supply is relatively slow, smaller refiners like PBF Energy (PBF.US) and HF Sinclair (DINO.US) are also expected to benefit. He emphasized that for Venezuelan exports to achieve substantial recovery, it may still take several years.

Several analysts on Wall Street also view Valero as the "biggest winner" in the scenario of a rebound in Venezuelan oil supply. Driven by these expectations, Valero's stock price surged over 9% on Monday.

Burry believes that investment opportunities are not limited to the refining sector. Due to long-term underinvestment, Venezuela's oil infrastructure has severely deteriorated, and once large-scale repairs are initiated, U.S. oil service companies may see new demand.

He revealed that he already holds shares of Halliburton (HAL.US) and is optimistic about potential opportunities with Schlumberger (SLB.US) and Baker Hughes (BKR.US), as these companies may participate in the reconstruction of pipelines and refining facilities.

"The pipelines and refineries in Venezuela are old and in disrepair, and these projects will likely be completed by U.S. contractors," Burry stated. Chevron (CVX.US) is already operating locally, and lawsuits by companies like ExxonMobil (XOM.US) regarding historical assets have been ongoing for decades. If the U.S. really begins to 'take over' Venezuela as some suggest, these issues may see a turning point. I hold Halliburton and may continue to increase my position."
