Thailand: EV sales jump 80% in 2025, lifting auto market

According to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI), Thailand’s main automotive industry body, 621,166 vehicles (excluding motorcycles) were sold domestically in 2025, up 8.47 per cent from 2024. Of this total, 120,301 units, or 19.37 per cent, came from battery-electric models.In 2024, electric car sales in Thailand stood at 66,732 units, representing a year-on-year decline of 9.29 per cent. They contributed 11.85 per cent to total sales, which stood at 572,675 vehicles (excluding motorcycles) and were down 26.18 per cent year-on-year. In addition, 726 battery-electric pickup trucks were sold in 2025, compared to none in the preceding year.Another major improvement in 2025 was a significant increase in BEV production, leading to a substantial reduction in the segment’s reliance on imports. The country manufactured 70,914 battery-electric cars last year, recording a 631.98 per cent year-on-year increase. By comparison, domestic battery-electric car production stood at just 9,688 units in 2024.As production ramped up, Thailand also began exporting battery-electric cars and pickup trucks in 2025. The country shipped 12,695 electric cars and 363 electric pickup trucks, which accounted for 1.36 per cent and 0.04 per cent, respectively, of total vehicle exports (935,750 units excluding motorcycles).Alongside BEVs, partially electrified vehicles are gaining traction in Thailand. In contrast to 2024, HEV sales exceeded those of internal combustion engine models in the passenger car category in 2025. ICE passenger car sales fell 16.87 per cent to 128,893 units, while hybrid passenger car sales increased 24 per cent to 146,059 units.Plug-in hybrid cars recorded 260.56 per cent year-on-year growth in Thailand in 2025, with 8,621 units sold. Extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) appeared in the sales data for the first time, with 971 passenger cars and 19 pickup trucks sold during the year.
