A report released Thursday by the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) found that the life expectancy of a person living in the U.S. was 79 years old in 2024, an increase of half a year compared to 2023. The report indicated that females continue to live longer than males, with female life expectancy increasing from 81.1 years in 2023 to 81.4 years in 2024. Life expectancy jumped slightly more for males, going from 75.8 years in 2023 to 76.5 years in 2024. The difference in life expectancy between the two sexes decreased to just under five years, according to the data. Death rates also fell by nearly 4 percent nationwide, dropping to their lowest level since before the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, 3.07 million deaths were registered in the United States, just over 18,000 fewer deaths than in 2023. The most significant drop in death rates was in Hispanic males at 5.9 percent, followed by American Indian and Alaska Native females and males at 5.2 percent and 5.1 percent, respectively. The leading causes of death were heart disease, cancer, and unintentional injuries, which together account for approximately 70 percent of all deaths in the U.S. in 2024; however, rates decreased for each of these causes, contributing to overall higher life expectancy. Suicide became the 10th leading cause of death, following a drop in pandemic-level deaths. The number of deaths for which COVID-19 was the underlying cause decreased approximately 37 percent from 49,932 in 2023 to 31,426 in 2024. The number of deaths attributed to COVID-19 dropped by 37 percent in 2024, with data showing the virus was the underlying cause in 31,426 deaths. The pandemic was replaced as the 10th leading cause of death by suicide. The data found no significant change in the infant mortality rate. The number of infant deaths was 20,050 in 2024, only 95 fewer than in 2023, and the leading causes of death remained largely the same. The report was compiled using data collected by NCHS from death certificates filed in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. ### Related Stocks - [ProShares Ultra Dow30 (DDM.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/DDM.US.md) - [ARK Innovation ETF (ARKK.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/ARKK.US.md) - [Invesco S&P 500® Low Volatility ETF (SPLV.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SPLV.US.md) - [Global X NASDAQ 100 Covered Call ETF (QYLD.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/QYLD.US.md) - [JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/JEPI.US.md) - [Vanguard Financials ETF (VFH.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/VFH.US.md) - [The Financial Select Sector SPDR® ETF (XLF.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/XLF.US.md) - [Invesco Dow Jones Industrial Avg Div ETF (DJD.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/DJD.US.md) - [Fidelity MSCI Financials ETF (FNCL.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/FNCL.US.md) - [iShares Dow Jones US ETF (IYY.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/IYY.US.md) - [Schwab US Dividend Equity ETF™ (SCHD.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/SCHD.US.md) - [ARK Genomic Revolution ETF (ARKG.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/ARKG.US.md) - [SPDR® Dow Jones Industrial Avrg ETF Tr (DIA.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/DIA.US.md) - [Vanguard Growth ETF (VUG.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/VUG.US.md) - [iShares MSCI USA Value Factor ETF (VLUE.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/VLUE.US.md) - [iShares MSCI USA Min Vol Factor ETF (USMV.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/USMV.US.md) - [Invesco S&P 500® Equal Weight ETF (RSP.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/RSP.US.md) - [ProShares UltraPro Dow30 (UDOW.US)](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/UDOW.US.md) ## Related News & Research - [Fed's Williams: Monetary policy is well-positioned to manage risks](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281568573.md) - [Hedge funds face worst monthly drawdown in over four years, Goldman Sachs tells clients](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281433591.md) - [Trump says he cannot comment on what US will do if missing pilot in Iran is harmed, The Independent says](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281662134.md) - [LIVE MARKETS-Dow in correction: Can Fibonacci support spark a reversal?](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281026597.md) - [Schwab U.S. Dividend Equity ETF (SCHD) Daily Update, 4/1/2026](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281371612.md)
