# Sector Update: Consumer Stocks Advance Late Afternoon

03:58 PM EST, 01/30/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Consumer stocks rose late Friday afternoon, with the State Street Consumer Staples Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLP) adding 1.5% and the State Street Consumer Discretionary Select Sector SPDR ETF (XLY) 0.2% higher.

In corporate news, Tesla (TSLA) shares climbed 4% after Bloomberg reported that Elon Musk's SpaceX is contemplating a potential merger with Tesla, as well as an alternative combination with AI firm xAI.

Verizon (VZ) shares jumped nearly 12%. The company provided a full-year earnings outlook above market estimates on Friday, and it recorded better-than-expected Q4 results amid strong growth in postpaid phone subscribers.

TAL Education ( TAL ) shares were up 0.4% following its Q3 results. Morgan Stanley lifted its price target to $16 from $14.60 and kept its overweight rating.

Mondelez ( MDLZ ) appears broadly stable in Q4 with little sign of sequential improvement or deterioration despite macro pressures, while the fiscal 2026 setup appears more constructive, RBC Capital Markets said in a note. Mondelez ( MDLZ ) shares added 1.8%.
