# FAA Says Boeing Must Do More as 737 Max Output Rises to 42 Monthly

Boeing remains under close regulatory oversight as it works to regain key safety certification authority, with US Federal Aviation Administration administrator Bryan Bedford signaling that further progress is still required. Speaking Monday in Singapore ahead of Asia's largest air show, Bedford said the company needs to do more, even as the FAA continues to work alongside Boeing to help it reach that point. He added that the planemaker is making great progress, but the comments suggest that regulatory confidence is still being rebuilt years after manufacturing lapses were exposed by a near-catastrophic accident.

While Boeing has regained some delegated powers in recent months, Bedford indicated that the FAA's longer-term objective is to eventually return full responsibility for final safety checks to the company. Under that framework, FAA staff could be redeployed deeper into Boeing's production facilities rather than handling routine certification work directly. The agency relies on Organization Designation Authorization programs to manage limited resources, allowing manufacturers to perform certain oversight functions that would otherwise be carried out by regulators.

Operational improvements at Boeing are already showing up on the factory floor. Progress in manufacturing quality has enabled the company to increase output of its 737 Max program to 42 aircraft a month, up from a prior cap of 38, marking a notable milestone for its most important commercial jet line. For investors, the pace at which Boeing can continue restoring regulatory trust could be closely linked to whether this production momentum proves sustainable and whether additional certification authority is gradually returned.
