# AI "colleagues" are about to go to work? OpenAI launches Frontier, targeting enterprise-level agent automation

OpenAI announced on Thursday the launch of a new platform designed to help businesses more easily deploy AI agents. Media reports indicate that this is part of the company's larger strategy to solidify its leading position in the automation of high-value work tasks.

**The new product, named Frontier, allows businesses to build and manage AI tools, ensuring that each AI agent has the appropriate safety barriers and data access permissions.** The platform aims to simplify the deployment process of AI agents and pave the way for broader adoption of this technology by enterprise clients.

OpenAI stated that Frontier can be used in conjunction with the AI agent building tools previously released by the company, making it easier for businesses to integrate various data sources required for AI agents to perform tasks. With this platform, AI agents can process information from different systems and complete tasks such as handling documents and running code.

Media reports indicate that top AI companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are increasingly betting on AI agents. These tools are designed to perform tasks on behalf of individuals with minimal human intervention. This trend has also triggered significant market volatility recently, as investors worry that these tools could disrupt traditional software vendors. Meanwhile, these AI startups are accelerating their efforts to capture enterprise clients across various industries to boost revenue and offset the enormous costs of developing more advanced artificial intelligence software.

**In a conference call with the media, OpenAI's Chief Executive Officer of Application Business, Fidji Simo, described these agents as "AI colleagues."** She stated that these AI agents can not only collaborate with humans but also work alongside AI agents developed by OpenAI's competitors, such as Anthropic and Microsoft.

> “We will systematically integrate the experiences learned from working directly with hundreds of large enterprises—about how to build, deploy, and manage AI agents, and truly get work done at scale—making the entire process much simpler.”
>
> “By the end of this year, most digital work in leading enterprises will be directed by humans and executed by swarms of AI agents. This is already happening in programming, and this change will extend to more areas.”

Notably, **OpenAI executives stated that the platform will allow businesses to access some competitors' AI agent software, including Anthropic. This means that Frontier has the potential to evolve into a one-stop platform for enterprises using AI agents.** In the past, Anthropic has sometimes restricted competitors' access to its underlying technology.

OpenAI reported that companies such as Intuit, State Farm, and Thermo Fisher Scientific are already using the Frontier product, and dozens of OpenAI clients are testing the product. OpenAI has also partnered with companies like ServiceNow to integrate its AI models directly into the AI agents of this business software company. However, OpenAI has not yet disclosed the pricing for Frontier

## The goal is not to replace existing software tools

As OpenAI released this news, software stocks plummeted significantly on Tuesday afternoon, with companies like PayPal, Expedia, and Intuit seeing their stock prices drop by more than 10%, resulting in a total market value loss of over $300 billion for software and data stocks. The market reaction primarily stems from investors' concerns that AI-driven disruptive technologies will reduce the demand for traditional software tools.

Earlier this week, OpenAI and Anthropic launched new products, which are considered important factors triggering this round of software stock sell-off. Anthropic recently expanded its Claude-driven Cowork assistant features, adding a series of plugins capable of executing professional business tasks, including plugins aimed at the legal industry.

On the same day that Frontier was released, Anthropic launched an AI model specifically for conducting financial research, Claude Opus 4.6. The company stated that this model can review company data, regulatory documents, and market information to generate detailed financial analyses, tasks that typically require days of manual effort to complete. Meanwhile, OpenAI also released a new version of its programming tool Codex on Thursday, which operates similarly to the applications that Anthropic is building for Claude.

**In contrast, Simo stated that the release of Frontier is "great news" for the software industry, as the platform is not intended to replace existing software tools. She noted that Frontier is positioned to help businesses distribute and run their own AI agents.**

Simo stated:

> "We cannot build every AI agent that businesses need. That is precisely why we designed the platform to allow all software companies to deploy AI agents on it."

These participants may include Microsoft's supporters of OpenAI, as well as companies like Oracle and SAP. These companies also provide specialized AI agents for automating business processes. OpenAI stated that these companies can promote and deploy their own AI agents through Frontier, while also serving as sources of business data to support the operation of customized AI agents.

To enable OpenAI's AI agents to function in certain scenarios, they need to access customer data from customer relationship management systems, such as Salesforce, as well as content from instant messaging applications like Slack, Simo stated.

Media reports indicate that the launch of Frontier is also aimed at helping OpenAI attract more enterprise users in the competition for corporate clients against rivals like Anthropic and Google. By establishing Frontier as a "de facto standard" for building and managing AI agents, regardless of whether these agents are developed by OpenAI, the company's goal is to bring more enterprise clients into its overall AI ecosystem
