Image credit: CnEVPost) China's power battery giant Gotion High-tech (SHE: 002074) has partnered with German chemical giant BASF to develop solid-state battery technology, as next-generation batteries are poised to enter mass-produced vehicles within the next year or two. The two companies recently signed a strategic cooperation memorandum in Hefei, Anhui —Gotion's headquarters city — to jointly develop next-generation solid-state battery technology, according to a statement by the battery manufacturer on Tuesday. The collaboration will focus on joint R&D of high-performance materials for next-generation solid-state batteries, covering multiple core materials, as well as overcoming technical bottlenecks in the commercialization process of solid-state batteries, Gotion said. (Image credit: Gotion) Currently, Gotion has established its first 0.2 GWh pilot production line for the Gemstone all-solid-state battery, achieving a yield rate exceeding 90% and an energy density of 300 Wh/kg, the company said, reiterating previously disclosed information. Gotion unveiled its Gemstone all-solid-state battery at the 13th technology conference on May 17, 2024, marking its official entry into this new battery sector. The all-solid-state battery would commence small-scale production and vehicle integration testing in 2027, with mass production anticipated by 2030, Pan Ruijun, head of Gemstone R&D, told media including CnEVPost during the event. Several major Chinese battery manufacturers, including CATL (HKG: 3750, SHE: 300750) and BYD (HKG: 1211, OTCMKTS: BYDDY), are targeting similar 2027 timelines for small-scale production of all-solid-state batteries. Gotion, one of the largest EV battery manufacturers, ranked fifth globally with a 4.5% market share and 53.5 GWh of battery installations in 2025, according to data from South Korean market research firm SNE Research.
