ProLogium Begins Construction of Battery Factory in France

Even before the announcement of the first cell factory outside Taiwan, ProLogium had secured funding commitments from the French government. However, the project subsequently went quiet until last year, when the solid-state battery cell manufacturer obtained the necessary environmental permits and construction approval for the factory in Dunkerque.The groundbreaking ceremony has now taken place near the coast of the English Channel. The facility, designed to produce fourth-generation lithium-ceramic solid-state batteries, will have an initial annual capacity of 0.8 GWh and is scheduled for completion in 2028, according to current plans. Drawing on its experience from the 3 GWh factory in Taoyuan, Taiwan, ProLogium aims to ramp up production in Dunkerque swiftly. From 2029, capacity will be increased, ensuring that by 2030, Phase 2 will see the plant operating at full capacity with 4 GWh per year. By 2032, the full capacity of the facility, dubbed “Fab 1,” is expected to reach 12 GWh.Site capable of scaling to 48 GWh annuallyAdditionally, the company has already secured reserved land in the port of Dunkerque for future expansion. In the long term and in response to market demand, the site has the potential to gradually scale up to 48 GWh, according to the announcement.ProLogium’s decision to locate in Dunkerque was driven by the site’s strategic position in Europe and its investment-friendly environment. The excellent connectivity to the seaport, inland waterways, rail network, and road logistics were also key factors. This combination has attracted other industry players to the region: Verkor has built a battery factory in Dunkerque (operational since December 2025), while the AESC facilities at the Renault site in Douai and the ACC factory in Douvrin are nearby.While investor VinFast is the primary customer for the lithium-ceramic solid-state batteries produced at ProLogium’s Taoyuan factory, no anchor customer has yet been publicly announced for the Dunkerque project.
