This case, known as the 'Hong Kong 47', involved the mass arrest of leading pro-democracy figures in early 2021, resulting in sentences ranging from 4 to 10 years for most, with only two acquittals. Critics argue this highlights the ongoing crackdown on dissent in the city. HONG KONG, Feb 23 (Reuters) - Hong Kong’s Court of Appeal on Monday rejected an appeal by 12 pro-democracy activists in a landmark national security case on a subversion conspiracy that critics say highlights the China-ruled city’s crackdown on dissent in recent years. The appeal stems from the “Hong Kong 47” democrats case, where many leading pro-democracy activists and politicians were arrested en masse in early 2021, and charged with conspiracy to commit subversion. Following marathon legal proceedings, most of the democrats were eventually sentenced in late 2024 to between 4 and 10 years imprisonment, with only two acquittals. ### Related Stocks - [02800.HK - TRACKER FUND](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/02800.HK.md) - [00HSI.HK - Hang Seng Index](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/00HSI.HK.md) - [03115.HK - ISHARESHSI](https://longbridge.com/en/quote/03115.HK.md) ## Related News & Research | Title | Description | URL | |-------|-------------|-----| | Hong Kong budget must be ‘prudent’, balance social needs and reserves: Paul Chan | Hong Kong's Financial Secretary Paul Chan emphasized the need for fiscal prudence in the upcoming 2026-27 budget, balanc | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276527893.md) | | Asian economies weigh impact of fresh Trump tariff moves, confusion | Asian economies are assessing the implications of President Trump's announcement to impose a new 10% global import tarif | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276506619.md) | | Hong Kong court dismisses bid to liquidate property giant Country Garden | A Hong Kong court has dismissed a petition to liquidate Country Garden, a major Chinese property developer, after the fi | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276287592.md) | | Hong Kong court grants bail to British man filmed wrecking airport kiosks | A Hong Kong court has granted bail to Youcef Bennoui, a 35-year-old British man charged with criminal damage after he wa | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276219915.md) | | Hong Kong court orders Christian Zheng Sheng Association to be liquidated | A Hong Kong court has ordered the liquidation of the Christian Zheng Sheng Association due to its failure to repay HK$61 | [Link](https://longbridge.com/en/news/276045397.md) | --- > **Disclaimer**: This article is for reference only and does not constitute any investment advice.
