Amid China's annual Spring Festival travel rush, Nio Inc (NYSE: NIO, HKG: 9866) faced unprecedented stress tests and data surges across its battery swap network. During the 2026 Spring Festival holiday, the Chinese EV maker delivered over 2 million battery swap services, consecutively breaking daily historical records for multiple days, according to an energy business report released Thursday. The data covers February 10-23. The recently concluded 2026 Chinese New Year holiday ran from February 15-23. Nio's daily battery swap volume hit new highs for five consecutive days from February 18 to 22, peaking at 177,627 swaps on February 22. During the holiday, Nio's 8,676 charging and battery swap facilities in China delivered 3,271,441 services, representing a 26.6% increase in daily average compared to the 2025 Spring Festival period. From February 15 to 23, Nio supplied a total of 25,283,118 kWh of electricity on expressways, accounting for 15% of China's expressway vehicle electricity consumption during this period. Nio's 720 battery swap stations located in expressway service areas saw an average of 1 vehicle completing a swap every 0.5 minutes. Including stations near highway entrances and exits, Nio operates 1,022 battery swap stations along expressways. The busiest highway stations — Longshan Service Area on G60 Shanghai-Kunming Expressway and Xianshan Service Area on G42 Shanghai-Chengdu Expressway — each handled nearly 200 daily services. This surge in demand stems from Nio's expanding user base and infrastructure footprint. By the end of January this year, Nio's cumulative deliveries had surpassed 1.02 million vehicles. Over 130,000 vehicles from its mass-market sub-brand Onvo have been integrated into the battery swap network, further boosting utilization rates. Just days before the Spring Festival on February 6, Nio achieved the milestone of 100 million cumulative battery swap services. Nio's rapid expansion in battery swapping reflects the widespread "charging challenge" faced by Chinese EV makers during holidays. Other NEV makers, including Xpeng (NYSE: XPEV, HKG: 9868), also experienced a surge in charging demand during this period. Facing massive self-driving traffic flows, most automakers like Xpeng primarily relied on expanding their 800V high-voltage ultra-fast charging networks to alleviate long-distance travel challenges. From February 9 to 23, Xpeng provided charging services to over 700,000 users, consuming more than 52 million kWh of electricity. During this period, Xpeng delivered over 880,000 charging sessions to its own owners and provided more than 700,000 charging sessions to consumers of other brands.
