# After the Google AI image generation tool became popular, the second generation version Nano Banana 2 was launched

On Thursday, Google released an upgraded version of its previously popular AI image generation model **Nano Banana**, emphasizing its faster performance, aimed at attracting more users to utilize its AI tools.

The company, which is a subsidiary of Alphabet, stated that the model named **Nano Banana 2** will gradually be integrated into several of its products, including the Gemini app, AI mode in search, Lens features, and its AI video tool Flow.

This release is the latest move in a series of initiatives that have pushed the company to the forefront of the AI race, helping it better compete with OpenAI's ChatGPT after initially facing a series of embarrassing setbacks. This series of successes has driven its stock price up **47%** over the past six months.

Google launched the Nano Banana AI image editor in August last year, which quickly went viral online, bringing **13 million** new users to the Gemini app in just 4 days in September. By mid-October, the tool had generated over **5 billion** images.

The tech giant subsequently launched the upgraded version **Nano Banana Pro** in November.

Google stated that Nano Banana 2 relies on the faster and cheaper **Flash** series models under Gemini, enabling quicker image generation and editing, while also having **stronger instruction comprehension and clearer details**.

In November, Google released the **Gemini 3** large model, which successfully prompted competitor OpenAI to issue an "alert" internally, accelerating their team's research and development.

Gemini 3 significantly increased user engagement, with monthly active users of the Gemini app surpassing **750 million** by the end of December
