# A woman suing Meta and YouTube, accusing them of causing social media addiction, is expected to testify in court

As its landmark trial continues in Los Angeles, a California woman is set to testify on Thursday about how her childhood use of YouTube, owned by Google, and Instagram, owned by Meta Platforms, harmed her mental health.

Carly G.M.'s lawyer claims that these companies knowingly put teenagers' mental health at risk by seeking to profit "by getting kids addicted to their services."

This case is part of a strong backlash against social media companies globally, accused of harming children and adolescents. Australia has banned children under 16 from using such platforms, and other countries are considering similar restrictions.

YouTube and Meta have denied these allegations, stating that the evidence in the case does not support the woman's claims.

The plaintiff's lawyers have summoned therapists in preparation for the next phase of the trial. They want to explore whether and how Carly's use of social media in her childhood affected her health.

At the start of the trial, the focus is on how much these companies know about social media and its effects on children, as well as their business strategies targeting young users. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg testified that the company had discussed products aimed at children but ultimately did not release any.
