Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned Trump: "The Iranian nation, which loves Ashura, is not afraid of your paper tiger threats. Forces stronger than you have failed to eliminate the Iranian nation. Be careful yourself—lest you be eliminated!" This statement was a response to Trump's threats. Trump had previously stated that if Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial energy chokepoint in the Persian Gulf—the U.S. would strike back hard. "If Iran dares to take any action to disrupt the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz, the United States will respond with a strike twenty times more powerful than ever before," the U.S. President wrote on the Truth Social platform. Larijani was a member of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and is one of the most influential politicians within the Iranian regime. Following the death of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in an airstrike, Iran has appointed a new Supreme Leader. Trump added in his post: "Furthermore, we will destroy those easily conquerable targets, leaving Iran as a nation with almost no chance of rebuilding—death, fire, and fury will engulf them! But I hope, and pray, that this will not happen!" The U.S.-Israel war against Iran has driven up global oil prices, although prices have retreated somewhat after Trump hinted on Monday that the conflict might end ## Related News & Research - [Analysis: Trump's Iran speech ignores the risks of a return to the 1970s](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281429917.md) - [Report reveals inflation will come roaring back under Trump](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281421192.md) - [Leo, the first US pope, emerges as pointed Trump critic](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281513774.md) - [Your produce bill is about to get pricey as the Iran war jacks up US food costs](https://longbridge.com/en/news/281681238.md) - [We’re on the cusp of something this country has never seen, Trump said.
