# Volkswagen Quietly Opens A New Energy Front

Volkswagen (VWAGY) is widening its playbook beyond electric vehicles, stepping into large scale energy storage as the automaker looks for new growth areas tied to the broader electrification shift.

The company on Monday switched on its first major battery storage facility in Salzgitter, Germany, operated through its Elli energy subsidiary. The installation has an output of about 20 MW and can store roughly 40 MWh of electricity, marking Volkswagen's first large scale move into the energy storage and trading space.

The timing is notable. Global EV demand has cooled somewhat from the aggressive expectations set a few years ago, prompting automakers to rethink how their battery technology and infrastructure can be used more broadly. Volkswagen increasingly sees energy storage and trading as a complementary business that fits naturally alongside its push into electrified vehicles.
