# Is Openclaw Flawless? | Lin Xiaozhen

The trends in the tech circle are indeed changing rapidly. Just last week, I analyzed in this column that commercial software services (SaaS) with deep industry knowledge and insights may not be easily replaced by AI tools. Friends who haven't read it can revisit the previous article. This week, the city is once again caught up in the Openclaw craze, with everyone diving into "raising lobsters." Some believe that with Openclaw, one can earn money while lying flat; others worry that Openclaw will "break their rice bowl."

## Openclaw Wins with Cross-Platform Operation

The biggest difference between Openclaw and other AI agents, such as ChatGPT and Copilot, is that the results generated by general AI agents are limited to outputting to their own platforms or internal software, while Openclaw operates like a real operator, capable of crossing different platforms and software. It can read the required data using one software, process it through a large language model (LLM), and then execute tasks using another software.

For example, a regional manager in retail, if they want to use AI to write a report on yesterday's sales to submit to management, in the past, they might first export the operational data from the accounting system for each branch, then analyze it using Perplexity to generate overview text and charts. To facilitate management's reading, they might copy the content into a Word document and then attach the document to an email to send to management. The power of Openclaw lies in its ability to autonomously read data and operate other AI systems or software as per user requests, meaning the above process can be fully automated without any manual handling.

## Building Openclaw Scenarios Becomes a New Demand

To build an Openclaw application scenario, a series of system connections and settings need to be performed, which requires certain technical skills. The demand in this area has recently surged. Media reports indicate that last week, a free installation event for Openclaw was held outside Tencent Cloud's headquarters in Shenzhen, attracting nearly a thousand people to queue. Since Openclaw also consumes computing power, AI stocks like MiniMax (100) have also surged in response. After the setup is completed, users only need to issue commands through general communication software, such as WhatsApp or WeChat, and Openclaw can execute tasks according to the instructions.

## Will Openclaw Replace Secretaries?

Since Openclaw can operate across platforms and systems, if it is merely integrating different data sources and applying them to specified templates for simple document work, Openclaw can completely replace human labor. So, can administrative secretaries "pack up"? For example, an executive secretary of a director needs to arrange the director's meetings and work schedule. If coordinating meeting dates, times, and locations is all done through email or WhatsApp, Openclaw can fully read the data and automatically update the schedule.

But imagine a day when the director meets with a senior executive from another department with the purpose of "finding fault" and complaining about the negligence of the director's subordinates. The executive secretary knows that the director is available in the morning, but to give the director time to understand the situation with colleagues and prepare, the secretary might say that the director can only meet with that senior executive in the afternoon These skills of "reading people's expressions" are the strengths that secretaries possess which cannot be replaced by AI.

## AI Errors Are Unaccountable

Openclaw has powerful execution capabilities, but its understanding of context and macro insights heavily depends on the user's instructions. Unlike traditional systems designed by system engineers and data engineers, which have clear data flows and carefully considered data sources even when AI applications are involved, the data covered by Openclaw during operation largely depends on the commands given by the user. If the instructions are not specific enough, the system is likely to make erroneous judgments; if there are unexpected situations in the process, the AI-driven fully automated process may also act out of control. If used in a business context, such as making and executing trading decisions without human oversight, any errors leading to losses leave users with no recourse for complaints. Therefore, I must reiterate that any AI application requires "Human-In-The-Loop" (HITL) as an indispensable element.

## Communication Software Control May Become Security Vulnerabilities

Using Openclaw also requires attention to security risks. Openclaw's cross-platform operation may involve reading data from different files. Recklessly building application scenarios outside the Tencent Cloud headquarters raises concerns about whether malicious actors have inserted original code to steal data, making it difficult to ensure security. Additionally, we often hear about friends whose communication software has been hacked, leading to financial scams against their relatives and friends. When WhatsApp can directly command Openclaw to control different software and open files on the computer, if WhatsApp is hacked, the data is completely exposed and vulnerable to theft.
