# OpenAI plans to integrate Sora video generation features into ChatGPT

PingWest reported on March 12 that OpenAI plans to integrate its AI video generation model Sora into ChatGPT to expand its multimodal capabilities and enhance user engagement. This move is seen as a key initiative to respond to competitors like Google Gemini (equipped with Veo AI) and Meta.

Sora is set to launch as an independent application in September 2025, quickly reaching the top of the Apple App Store initially, but user retention has continued to decline, and it currently ranks at 165th. By embedding Sora into ChatGPT, OpenAI hopes to leverage its approximately 920 million weekly active users to revive Sora's influence and push the user count towards the target of 1 billion.

However, video generation requires extremely high computational power. OpenAI estimates that from 2026 to 2030, the inference costs alone will exceed $225 billion. The company is ramping up its reserve of computing resources to cope with potential usage peaks after the feature goes live.

This integration marks a shift in AI technology focus from text interaction to audiovisual multimodality, but it also poses severe challenges in balancing cost control and user experience.
