# Exploring "Chinese-style retirement," this insurance company provides solutions

"Improve the policy mechanism for the coordinated development of the elderly care industry" "Expand the supply of inclusive elderly care services" "Develop the silver economy" "Implement a long-term care insurance system" ... This year, the topic of elderly care has once again sparked widespread social attention.

In China, there are over 300 million people aged 60 and above. How to ensure that these 300 million elderly people can enjoy a good life, contribute to society, and find joy in their later years is not only a major issue of national livelihood that the government is striving to address but also an innovative blue ocean that enterprises are eager to tap into. As one of the pioneers, Taikang Insurance Group's new life insurance model, based on the theory of longevity, provides a valuable local example for observing how the insurance industry can solve the challenges of elderly care and contribute to the development of elderly finance. This model represents not just an innovation of a single enterprise but also a directional exploration of the insurance industry's implementation of the national strategy to actively respond to population aging.

**Deeply cultivate the longevity economy experimental field, blooming the "enjoyable old age" happiness flower**

At Taikang Home · Yan Garden, 80-year-old Feng Jiasheng insists on practicing Baduanjin every day, attends vocal classes, and volunteers in the nursing area during her free time, keeping her schedule fully packed. With such high energy, no one can tell that she has battled cancer three times and is deaf in both ears ![Image](https://imageproxy.pbkrs.com/https://inews.gtimg.com/om_bt/OZ0XV2DkqkE-7NkRzJyNi-WtWCQvEPBbbWdCh1XhkcRVEAA/641?x-oss-process=image/auto-orient,1/interlace,1/resize,w_1440,h_1440/quality,q_95/format,jpg)

Taikang resident Feng Jiasong

Feng Jiasong's elderly life reflects a moment from 2008 across time and space. At that time, Taikang had just begun to explore entering the elderly care field. Taikang Insurance Group's founder, chairman, and CEO Chen Dongsheng led a team to the United States for research, where they saw in a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC): a 95-year-old man running on a treadmill, and a group of elderly ladies dancing to music.

Chen Dongsheng and the Taikang team were deeply shocked; this was completely different from the elderly lifestyles they had encountered in China at that time. Chen Dongsheng was determined to bring this model back to China, transforming "elderly care" into "enjoying old age," and changing the quality of life and perceptions of elderly care for Chinese seniors.

After more than a decade of deep cultivation, dreams have turned into reality, and the "longevity economy experimental field" that Taikang has planted is flourishing. In 2007, Taikang entered the elderly care service field; in 2009, it obtained pilot qualifications for insurance funds to invest in elderly care communities; in 2012, the annuity product "Happiness Appointment," which connects to elderly care communities, was launched, innovatively combining virtual insurance with physical services; in the same year, Taikang's first flagship community, Taikang Home·Yanyuan, was established; in 2015, Taikang Home·Yanyuan opened; in 2017, the new profession of Health Wealth Planner (HWP) was born.

Subsequently, Happiness Appointment developed into a product system of "Four Appointments," including Longevity Appointment, Health Appointment, Wealth Appointment, and Good Longevity Appointment; Taikang Home has laid out 47 projects in 37 core cities across the country, with 27 communities in 24 locations already opened and operating, serving over 20,000 residents; the medical service network, including self-built physical hospitals, family doctors, and green channel services, is continuously being woven tighter, step by step following national policies and the needs of people's livelihoods, enriching the connotation of insurance protection.

The solution Taikang provides for elderly care issues is not just "a policy," but "a brand new lifestyle." There are Peking University professors who have tirelessly written over 5 million words in Yanyuan over ten years, reaching the peak of their creativity; there are famous directors who hold "film salons" for community neighbors, continuing to enjoy the nourishment of art... Vibrant lives bloom during the sunset period, transforming from "passive elderly care" to "active enjoyment of old age," vividly reflected in Taikang residents, where "aging gracefully" becomes a tangible possibility.

Behind this lifestyle of elderly care is actually Taikang's deep cultivation of the life insurance industry chain, extending traditional virtual insurance business into the physical medical and health care service field, adding a "service end" of medical and health care to the two-dimensional structure of liabilities and investments in traditional life insurance The "Payment + Service + Investment" three-pronged collaboration has constructed a new life insurance model.

The life insurance industry has gathered a large amount of long-term funds, while the market lacks sufficient investment targets that match these funds, leading to a liability matching issue. By introducing the "service end," it finds assets that naturally match insurance funds, reshaping the traditional binary structure of insurance assets and liabilities. This has found a differentiated development path for China's life insurance industry amidst the homogeneous product red sea, elevating the competitive dimension of the insurance industry from premiums and yields to ecology and services, which is one of the important directions for industry evolution.

This model integrates pension finance, elderly care service finance, and elderly care industry finance, expanding the insurance industry from traditional financial protection solutions to elderly care solutions. In terms of pension finance, Taikang has solidified its pension funding and payment capabilities. By the end of 2025, Taikang will be the largest pension manager in the market, with approximately CNY 1.3 trillion in invested management for first and second pillar pensions, and its third pillar personal pensions ranking among the industry leaders. In terms of elderly care industry finance, Taikang ranks among the top in the number of elderly care beds, elderly care institutions, and hospitals. In terms of elderly care service finance, Taikang has launched the innovative dual product system "Longevity Appointment + Health Appointment" and has innovatively created the "Urban Elderly Care Alliance," with the number of residents in elderly care communities and the number of happy appointment customers continuously increasing.

**Building a medical and elderly care ecological service, making elderly care more reliant on "medical" support**

The "14th Five-Year Plan," which outlines the social and economic development prospects for the next five years, proposes significant deployments under the framework of "high-quality population development" to "actively respond to population aging and improve the policy mechanism for the coordinated development of elderly care undertakings and industries."

Elderly care undertakings have public welfare and inclusiveness, with the government as the main responsible entity, functioning to "provide a safety net" and "ensure the basics." In contrast, the elderly care industry is market-oriented and competitive, with enterprises and social forces as the operational entities, continuously meeting the increasingly diverse, personalized, and high-quality needs of the elderly through market competition and innovation. Currently, the "multi-level," "diversified," and "high-quality" elderly care industry has been optimized and upgraded to involve a mixed business model incorporating various future industry elements such as "medical care, elderly care, health, culture, and tourism." As a participant in the elderly care industry, Taikang has gradually recognized the inseparability of elderly care and medical services in the process of promoting the implementation of elderly care. For the elderly, especially those with chronic diseases and disabilities or dementia, the greatest demand is for integrated medical and nursing services. Elderly care institutions and medical institutions are isolated from each other, lacking effective connection mechanisms, leading to many inconveniences for the elderly in the process of seeking medical care and elderly care. In recent years, our country has successively introduced many policies to promote the integration of medical and nursing services, aiming to address the practical pain points of the separation of medical and nursing systems and decentralized management.

Taikang first pioneered a new model of integrated medical and nursing services called "one community, one hospital," by building rehabilitation hospitals characterized by geriatric medicine, rehabilitation medicine, and health management in elderly care communities, establishing a three-level emergency service network of "community preliminary treatment - rehabilitation hospital in-depth treatment - external hospital emergency referral," to comprehensively safeguard the life and health safety of community residents.

On this basis, Taikang has also entered the comprehensive medical field, gradually laying out physical medical services through self-construction, investment, and cooperation. Currently, Taikang Medical has established five major medical centers across the country, including Taikang Xianlin Gulou Hospital, Taikang Tongji (Wuhan) Hospital, Sichuan Taikang Hospital, Ningbo Taikang Brain Hospital, and Shenzhen Qianhai Taikang Hospital. Taikang Dental also operates nearly 120 chain stores under the two brands "Taikang Baibo Dental" and "Taikang Dental." The Taikang "Health Insurance Pass" network hospitals have reached over 3,200, covering more than 300 cities nationwide.

Taikang Xianlin Gulou Hospital

On March 3, Taikang Insurance Group's Taikang Xianlin Gulou Hospital, operated in cooperation with Nanjing Gulou Hospital, was rated as a national tertiary first-class comprehensive hospital by the Jiangsu Provincial Health and Health Department. This marks a significant achievement in Taikang's "seamless service system throughout the entire life cycle" and is a typical practice of the coordinated development of elderly care and the elderly care industry.

"In the past, customers' impression of insurance agents was just selling insurance, which was purely sales. With the service end, we can provide more value to customers," said Taikang Health Wealth Planner (HWP) Song Xiaofei. "When customers get sick, how do they seek medical care? How do they plan for retirement? We couldn't answer these questions before, but now with new life insurance and large health entities, my relationship with customers has transformed from a single policy to a lifelong connection." She shared an experience where she accompanied a customer to Taikang Xianlin Gulou Hospital for a gastrointestinal examination, where seven polyps were found and promptly removed to avoid future complications, allowing the customer to truly experience the advantages of Taikang's medical and nursing ecosystem.

**Persist in investing in people, giving rise to three new professions**

People are the measure of all things, and all business innovations aim to serve, develop, and achieve people. The "14th Five-Year Plan" clearly states, "Promote the comprehensive development of people" and "Integrate the investment in material and investment in people closely with benefiting people's livelihoods and promoting consumption."

"In the past decade, China has experienced a decline in both the labor population and the total population. In the future, the transformation of the demographic dividend can only be achieved through one path—improving the quality of talent to gain a talent dividend," said Ying Weiwei, Assistant President and Secretary of the Board of Directors of Taikang Insurance Group, and Chairman of the Taikang Yicai Public Welfare Foundation, reflecting on the profound changes in the era.

In Taikang's new life insurance model of "three-terminal collaboration," people are an important factor throughout. The innovation of the business model has given rise to three different new professional groups: Health Wealth Planners (HWP), Youth Pensioners, and Yicai Health Care Providers. Taikang invests in people with a developmental perspective, exploring a path driven by high-quality talent.

At the end of 2018, Taikang launched the Health Wealth Planner (HWP) project, exploring the creation of a model profession in the financial industry. "In my retirement planning, Health Wealth Planners play a very important role. They understand finance and can help you formulate retirement plans, ensuring that any concerns we have when moving into a retirement community can be well addressed," said Feng Jiasheng.

The marketing methods of China's life insurance industry initially involved "individual operations" through unfamiliar visits, later entering a "land-grabbing" operational phase where a mass strategy became mainstream, compressing the training and management costs of individual agents and shifting to a group marketing model of "product presentations." HWP transforms insurance agents from "transmitters" of risk protection plans to "co-builders" of clients' long, healthy, and prosperous lives, marking a profound transformation of its insurance agent team.

With the explosion of retirement demand, the transformation of professional groups is also particularly urgent. The "2025 Survey Report on the Current Situation of Care Workers" predicts that in the next five years, the number of people in China relying on care will increase to 40 million, with a shortage of caregivers reaching 5.5 million Taikang has created another team of "Youth Caregivers" — a service team of over 18,000 people with an average age of only 32, where those born in the 1990s and 2000s account for more than 50%, and over 75% have a college degree or higher, injecting new vitality of youth, knowledge, and professionalism into the traditional concept of "caregivers" in elderly care services.

23-year-old Yang Zhenqing is an undergraduate majoring in elderly care management and has become a life steward at Taikang Home · Shenyuan after graduation. He admitted that he felt disappointed when he was first assigned to this role, but once he stepped into the front line of elderly care, he realized that this job is far more than just "serving tea and water." "Elders not only need physical care; they also crave participation, social interaction, and the desire to continue to shine," he said.

25-year-old nurse Yi Meijing interprets her love for the profession with the trophy she won for first place in the elderly care skills competition. In response to the prejudice against "young caregivers," she said, "When frail elders gradually improve under our care, and when family members say, 'I feel very assured leaving the elderly in your hands,' that is my reason to keep going."

However, on a broader social level, the elderly care industry faces the dilemma of low social recognition and weak occupational attractiveness. Caregivers work in an environment with high intensity and low self-identity; how can they be seen?

By the end of 2025, Taikang launched the "Yicai Kangyangren" project, collaborating with multiple organizations to select 100 elderly care talents nationwide. Through the power of public welfare, it provides hardware support, professional empowerment, and value reconstruction for elderly care practitioners. On one hand, it exports Taikang's professional experience and resource capabilities in the medical and elderly care fields; on the other hand, it recognizes and honors role models to enhance the social recognition and professional honor of practitioners.

In Ling Shan County, Guangxi, social worker Lu Linfeng, who returned from Shenzhen to start a business, saw another possibility for rural elderly care. Over nearly ten years, he has led a team of 60 social workers with an average age of 32, covering elderly care services across 19 street offices in the county, serving over 150,000 elderly people in total. In 2025, Lu Linfeng became one of the "Yicai Kangyangren," and with the support of the Yicai Foundation, he participated in "Yicai Training" in Beijing and visited Taikang Home · Yanyuan for learning. "From one person's perseverance to a group’s companionship, allowing rural elders to live their later years with dignity is my goal," Lu Linfeng said.

Under the wave of an aging population, there is not just one answer to the era's question of Chinese-style elderly care. Taikang uses "New Life Insurance" as the key, coordinating payment, service, and investment, constructing an ecosystem of integrated medical and elderly care, and empowering talent as an internal driving force, turning the vision of aging gracefully into a tangible reality, while fully demonstrating the value of the insurance industry in the field of elderly finance AD
