# Meta will shut down the Horizon VR virtual world service

This decision was made after recent layoffs in the company's Reality Labs division.

Meta Platforms announced on Tuesday that it will shut down the Horizon Worlds service for its VR headset users.

This VR social network will continue to operate through a mobile app, but starting in June, users accessing the app via Meta Quest headsets will no longer be able to create, publish, or update virtual scenes.

Horizon Worlds was a core part of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's metaverse vision, but since its launch, the platform has faced scrutiny over child safety and content moderation issues, and its cartoon-style virtual avatars have also been criticized.

In January of this year, Meta had already laid off about 1,500 people in the Reality Labs division, which is responsible for virtual and mixed reality products, including Horizon Worlds and Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses
