WeChat, known for its restraint in changes, has taken a step into new territory.
On March 22, WeChat officially launched an official plugin called ClawBot, allowing users to connect their cloud or local OpenClaw directly to the WeChat chat window by simply scanning a QR code or copying a line of command. Once connected, users can interact with OpenClaw through WeChat chat and remotely command related tasks.
This means that this largest national-level social application has officially transformed into a remote control for an open-source agent that was born only a few months ago.
Such swift action is extremely rare in the development history of WeChat and Tencent.
From being publicly accused of &#34;copying&#34; by the founder of OpenClaw on March 12, to quickly becoming a sponsor of the OpenClaw community through GitHub Sponsors on March 16, and then the comprehensive integration of QQ and WeChat, Tencent has been rapidly launching a series of efficient and unusual features around OpenClaw in just ten days.
Behind these signs may lie the anxiety and ambition of major companies regarding the control of the next generation &#34;operating system.&#34;
<h2>Exceptionally Aggressive</h2>
Since its launch in 2011, extreme restraint has always been the cultural background of WeChat.
Every revision and new feature over the past fifteen years has undergone repeated evaluations and internal testing, fearing disturbance to users. As Zhang Xiaolong has repeatedly emphasized, &#34;A good product is one that you can use and leave.&#34; In the past, WeChat would rather miss some opportunities than add a feature that feels abrupt to users on the core interface. Even before this release, the most popular WeChat plugin feature only showcased the WeChat input method.
However, from the yuanbao marketing before the 2026 Spring Festival to the current OpenClaw integration, WeChat seems to have unusually pressed the accelerator.
&#34;WeChat's initial culture did not want to add too many features; at its peak, there were internal concerns about taking up too much of users' time,&#34; pointed out a person close to Tencent. &#34;But the speed of AI iteration is fast, and if adjustments are not made quickly, it is not just a problem for WeChat, but a challenge for Tencent.&#34;
This is enough to prove one thing: from Tencent's strategic perspective, agents may be becoming a new species that disrupts the existing internet interaction logic, with dangers and values that are comparable to the impact of short video feeds in recent years.
From a defensive perspective, Tencent clearly does not want to see users migrate their workflows to DingTalk or Feishu platforms in large numbers to use AI assistants. If it cannot become the window for users to command agents in the future, it could further shake WeChat's foundational position in the mobile internet infrastructure.
Rather than letting others revolutionize its business, it is better to take action first. Opening up access is a way to preserve the super app's basic user base through disruptive innovation.
Pony Ma's attitude speaks volumes; he rarely shared content about Tencent's entire OpenClaw product line on his Moments and personally wrote: &#34;Self-developed OpenClaw, local claw, cloud claw, enterprise claw, cloud desktop claw, secure isolation claw room, cloud security, knowledge base... and a batch of products are on the way.&#34;
The CEO personally getting involved in shrimp farming is also extremely rare in Tencent's history.
Not only that, what WeChat did today is equivalent to giving this technology a free national-level advertisement covering one billion people.
Although OpenClaw has recently gained a lot of attention, with major companies rolling out one-click deployment, the increase in convenience only improves efficiency for existing users. However, for many outsiders, there is still significant room for penetration improvement for lobster.
Under the flood of traffic from WeChat, products like lobster and Agent will greatly shorten the market education cycle. When hundreds of millions of users have their first Agent experience on lobster, its &#34;Android-like&#34; status in this field will be further solidified.
<h2>Entry Power Grab</h2>
Over the past decade, the main battlefield of the internet has undergone three major migrations.
The first was from PC to mobile, where the entry point shifted from browsers to the App Store. During this process, Tencent became the biggest beneficiary through WeChat and later mini-programs.
The second was from text and images to short videos, with user time massively shifting from WeChat and Weibo to Douyin and Kuaishou, exposing WeChat to potential challenges in traffic and user retention time.
Currently, AI is nurturing the third migration, from &#34;people searching for information&#34; to &#34;people issuing commands.&#34;
Under the Agent logic, users only need to express their needs in natural language within a dialogue box, and AI will take care of everything. This dialogue box is likely to become the super entry point of the next generation.
Tencent's intention is clear: regardless of which large model operates in the background, as long as the user's remote control entry remains in WeChat, Tencent will still be the infrastructure of the internet.
This is both defense and offense.
On the defensive side, it is about reclaiming user time that has been eroded by short videos. With Douyin and Kuaishou fiercely competing for fragmented time, WeChat's frequency of opening and retention time face challenges. Introducing AI into the dialogue box gives WeChat the productivity attributes to handle work and life chores, forcibly enhancing the app's irreplaceability. Users no longer open WeChat just for chatting and scrolling through Moments, but to have AI help them work, creating a brand new usage scenario and a new growth pole for user time.
On the offensive side, it is about seizing the future traffic throat. The past internet entry was browsers, now it is super apps, and in the future, it will be AI agents. Whoever occupies this position first will secure a ticket for the next decade.
Of course, in addition to the front-end entry strategy, Tencent also has a hidden card in the back end, which is Tencent Cloud.
Tencent Cloud's lightweight application server, Lighthouse, launched the one-click deployment image for lobster in mid-March. Competitors like Alibaba Cloud have also introduced similar services, but WeChat remains an excellent traffic diversion weapon in Tencent's hands.
When users without lobster realize they need a cloud server to keep lobster online 24 hours, WeChat could become the closest deployment button at any time.
<h2>Redemption Arc</h2>
Tencent's journey to this point has been dramatic.
Ten days ago, on March 12, OpenClaw founder Peter Steinberger publicly fired shots on social media. The trigger was Tencent's launch of the SkillHub platform, a product claiming to be a localized skill image station that moved over 13,000 skill packages from the OpenClaw official community ClawHub
Peter bluntly stated: &#34;They plagiarized, yet do not support this project in any way.&#34; He also questioned the Tencent Mix team: &#34;Can you help out instead of forcing my server costs into five figures?&#34;
Public opinion instantly exploded. For a giant with a market value of HKD 5 trillion, being publicly humiliated by an independent developer is quite embarrassing.
Tencent responded quickly. The official account Tencent AI listed a set of data below the tweet: In the first week of SkillHub's launch, it distributed 180GB of data to domestic users and supported 870,000 downloads, but only pulled about 1GB of non-concurrent requests from the official source.
However, Peter was not convinced. After all, it was Tencent that unilaterally intercepted user and download statistics without prior communication.
The turning point occurred on March 16.
Peter tweeted, confirming that Tencent Light Cloud had officially become a sponsor of the OpenClaw community through GitHub Sponsors.
He used a meaningful expression: &#34;Love a good redemption arc.&#34;

Tencent's turnaround came extremely quickly, first making a mistake, then correcting it, and finally re-entering the game with greater stakes.
