Locked-in orders for Xiaomi's new-generation SU7 electric sedan have surpassed 30,000 units, as the Beijing-based tech giant seeks to further challenge Tesla.

Xiaomi founder, chairman, and CEO Lei Jun revealed this sales milestone during a live-streamed event on Monday. The company held the first delivery ceremony for the upgraded model earlier today in Shenzhen.

"The sales situation for the new-generation SU7 has consistently been much better than the first-generation model," Lei said during the livestream.

Among the more than 30,000 locked-in orders, the green exterior was the most popular choice among consumers, accounting for over 25%, according to Lei.

In terms of trim levels, the entry-level Standard version is the most popular, followed by the Pro version.

The upgraded sedan officially hit the market on March 19, and within the first 34 minutes of its launch, the model secured over 15,000 locked-in orders.

The starting price of the new-generation SU7 is set at 219,900 yuan ($31,820). This official starting price is only 4,000 yuan higher than the first-generation SU7, and remains 15,600 yuan lower than the current starting price of rival Tesla's Model 3.

To meet strong consumer demand, Xiaomi began production preparations two months in advance. These pre-prepared vehicles can be delivered within one to five weeks after an order is locked in.

Lei said that the new-generation model features over 100 significant hardware and software upgrades. These enhancements have increased the model's material costs by about 20,000 yuan ($2,893).

While advancing new car deliveries, Xiaomi is also accelerating its expansion in the motorsport sector. The company officially signed title sponsorship agreements with three top-tier racing events in China.

The tech giant is relying on the updated SU7 sedan, the YU7 SUV (sport utility vehicle), and more new models as it attempts to achieve its 2026 sales target set at 550,000 units.
