# Duke Energy secures approval for gas plant in South Carolina

March 26 (Reuters) - Utility Duke Energy (DUK.N) said on Thursday that the Public Service Commission of South Carolina had approved its plan to build new natural gas-fired generation in Anderson County, after a review process that included a public hearing.

Utilities are seeking new and more diverse energy sources as population growth, business expansion and a surge in electricity demand from data centers drive power needs higher, while companies also look for cleaner sources of energy.

The facility is expected to generate an annual statewide economic impact of about $84 million once operational, the company said.

Construction is slated to begin in the summer of 2027, with the plant expected to begin serving customers in early 2031.
