Middle East's largest aluminum plant attacked, global aluminum supply chain hit again.
According to Xinhua News Agency, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a statement on the 29th, saying that the Revolutionary Guard used missiles and drones to &#34;effectively&#34; strike aluminum plants in the UAE and Bahrain associated with the United States. The statement said these two aluminum plants are related to the U.S. military and aerospace industries, namely the plants of Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) and Aluminium Bahrain (Alba).
Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) stated on March 28th that its core smelter in Abu Dhabi was damaged in an attack due to the conflict in the Middle East, further exacerbating the tight supply situation in the global aluminum market. The UAE is a major supplier to the global market, and EGA operates the country's largest metal processing plant.
In a statement, EGA said it is assessing the damage at its Al Taweelah plant and confirmed that several employees were injured in the attack, but did not disclose whether the facility has suspended operations. The Abu Dhabi Media Office previously stated that debris from intercepted ballistic missiles triggered three fires near the Kezad industrial zone, resulting in six injuries.
Aluminum prices were already on an upward trend before the conflict broke out. This attack further strengthens market expectations of tightening supply and declining global inventories, which may drive aluminum prices higher. Goldman Sachs pointed out that rising commodity prices will put pressure on the global economy.

<h2>Supply Chain Hit Hard Again, Middle East Aluminum Industry Deep in Predicament</h2>
The attack has once again severely impacted the Middle East's commodity industry. The Strait of Hormuz is essentially under blockade, and producers of various commodities, from energy to fertilizers, are unable to export normally. The Middle East accounts for about 9% of global aluminum supply, most of which is currently blocked on the inner side of the strait.
In addition to shipping disruptions, key industrial facilities were damaged in the attack. It is expected that even after the hostilities end, it will take longer to restore production operations.
The damaged Al Taweelah smelter is located in the Khalifa Port industrial zone in Abu Dhabi, adjacent to the Persian Gulf coast. The plant, with a cast metal output of 1.6 million tons in 2025, is one of EGA's two smelters, the other being located in the Jebel Ali Free Zone in Dubai.
EGA stated in the statement that at the beginning of the Middle East conflict, the company had already reserved a significant amount of metal inventory overseas and used these products to maintain supply to customers.
As the UAE's largest non-energy industrial enterprise, EGA is an important participant in the UAE's plan to invest $1.4 trillion in the U.S. over the next decade. The UAE was previously the second-largest aluminum supplier to the U.S., after Canada, and is building the first new aluminum smelter in the U.S. in decades in Oklahoma.
