# Tencent subsidiary’s WeChat Malaysia granted Malaysia Digital status, to expands local operations

WeChat Malaysia Sdn. Bhd., a subsidiary of Chinese tech giant Tencent, has been awarded “Malaysia Digital” (MD) status by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation, marking a step in the company’s expansion within Malaysia’s digital sector.

In a release on Wednesday, Tencent said the designation reflects the establishment of Tencent’s technological and business operations hub in Malaysia. The hub is intended to support global operations while contributing to local digital development.

Tencent highlighted the hub will provide technical support and optimisation across several business areas, including games and entertainment, payments, artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud technologies. It will also support digital systems used by local businesses.

Tencent is also expanding digital engagement across its platforms in Malaysia, including AI-driven and omnichannel services aimed at improving customer interaction and operational efficiency. The hub is expected to support applications such as travel services and cross-border payments.

Tencent has also formed partnerships to support tourism and payments. A memorandum of collaboration between Tourism Malaysia and Weixin Pay aims to improve travel-related services for visitors. The company reported increased usage of its mobile payment solutions among tourists during the Lunar New Year period.

Judy Wong, country manager of Tencent Malaysia, said the MD status aligns with the company’s plans to expand its presence in the country while supporting local capabilities.

Anuar Fariz Fadzil, c\\CEO of Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC, said the MD status highlights Malaysia’s position as a base for global technology companies and supports efforts to strengthen the country’s digital economy through partnerships, job creation and skills development.
