# China Tourism Economy Blue Book: The tourism economy enters a new cycle of prosperous development

"The Analysis of China's Tourism Economy Operation in 2025 and Development Forecast for 2026" (China Tourism Economy Blue Book NO.18) (hereinafter referred to as "Blue Book") was recently published. The Blue Book shows that in 2025, the tourism economy will start strong and finish perfectly, marking a successful conclusion to the 14th Five-Year Plan, and will steadily enter a new cycle of prosperous development and a new stage of high-quality development. Domestic tourism demand will upgrade and the market will sink, presenting a new pattern of spatial and temporal balanced development characterized by "seven festivals and four seasons" and "urban-rural interaction," with major market indicators reaching historical highs. From "China Travel" and "China Shopping" to a comprehensive experience of contemporary China's beautiful life, the inbound tourism market for foreigners has achieved unexpected growth.

The Blue Book indicates that in 2025, lower-tier cities, counties, and rural areas will not only serve as important domestic tourism destinations but will also become new growth points for domestic tourism sources. The willingness of rural residents to travel will reach 81.0% in 2025. Rural residents will contribute 31.8% to the growth of the total number of travelers nationwide. Reservation data from scenic spots show that nearly 40% of visitors come from small and medium-sized cities, an increase of 7 percentage points from the previous year, and the proportion of those traveling frequently (three times or more) is higher than that of other city sizes.

The Blue Book believes that in 2026, the willingness of urban and rural residents to travel and the confidence of entrepreneurs will stabilize at a high level, tourism consumption and investment financing will become more active, and development expectations will be positive and optimistic. It predicts that in 2026, the total number of domestic tourists will reach 6.949 billion, a year-on-year increase of 6.0%; total domestic tourism expenditure will reach 6.68 trillion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 5.0%. The number of inbound tourists will be 163 million, a year-on-year increase of 8.0%; the number of foreign visitors entering the country will be 36.661 million, a year-on-year increase of 10.0%
