# In the Era of "Coding for All", New Apps on Apple's App Store Soar 84% in a Single Quarter

Apple's App Store, dormant for years, is experiencing an AI-driven explosion of new applications.\\n\\nAccording to data from market research firm Sensor Tower, **in the first quarter of 2026, the number of new applications listed globally on Apple's App Store surged 84% year-over-year to 235,800, continuing the strong rebound momentum since 2025.**\\n\\nThis growth rate marks a complete reversal of the app store's decline over the past decade—the number of new applications had cumulatively fallen by 48% between 2016 and 2024.\\n\\nThe primary driver of this growth appears to be AI-assisted "vibe coding" tools, represented by Anthropic's Claude Code and OpenAI's Codex. **These tools enable non-professional programmers to generate functional applications through text prompts while significantly boosting the efficiency of professional developers.**\\n\\nMeanwhile, **Apple has taken regulatory measures against some native vibe coding applications and blocked vibe coding apps from updating their features after listing.**\\n\\n## **Ten-Year Downtrend Abruptly Reversed**\\n\\nThe sudden rebound in the number of new applications stands in stark contrast to the preceding prolonged slump.\\n\\nAccording to Sensor Tower data, Apple's App Store experienced a continuous decline in the number of newly listed applications each year for a considerable period. From 2016 to 2024, the cumulative drop was as high as 48%.\\n\\nHowever, starting in 2025, this trend underwent a fundamental shift: the total number of newly listed applications in 2025 grew by 30% year-over-year, approaching 600,000; in the first quarter of 2026, this growth accelerated further, with the year-over-year increase reaching 84%.\\n\\nAbraham Yousef, a Senior Analyst at Sensor Tower, stated: "Over the past year, we've seen an explosive growth in new applications, which aligns closely with the widespread adoption of intelligent programming tools that can eliminate application development barriers."\\n\\n## **AI Programming Tools Open the Developer "Faucet"**\\n\\nThis surge in new applications is underpinned by the rapid popularization of vibe coding tools.\\n\\nVibe coding refers to a programming method that uses AI models to automatically generate code through natural language prompts.\\n\\nAmong these, Anthropic's Claude Code was released in a limited preview in February 2025 and made available to a wider audience in May of the same year; OpenAI's Codex launched its limited preview in May 2025 and officially expanded its availability in October of that year.\\n\\nThe core value of these tools lies in lowering the development threshold: non-programmers can directly generate executable applications through text descriptions, while developers with existing programming knowledge can produce code at a speed far exceeding manual writing.\\n\\nAlthough it is currently difficult to accurately quantify the proportion of applications developed using AI tools, considering the rapid adoption of these tools, the mainstream view is that most new applications rely on AI assistance.\\n\\n## **Apple Steps In to Control and Restrict Vibe Coding**\\n\\nThe influx of new applications also presents new challenges for Apple's ecosystem management.\\n\\nAs first reported by The Information, Apple has begun to restrict native applications that allow users to perform vibe coding directly on iOS devices: Replit's vibe coding app was prevented from updating, and another app called Anything was removed entirely.\\n\\nIn response, Apple stated that these actions were not specifically targeted at vibe coding applications but were in execution of existing review guidelines— **the rule prohibits applications from rewriting code in a manner that substantially alters their functionality without approval from the review team.**\\n\\nApple's control measures have not fundamentally halted the emergence of new applications—vibe coding tools can also run on personal computers.\\n\\nAccording to a Replit spokesperson, Replit users have built and released nearly 5,000 App Store applications through the platform in recent months; Dhruv Amin, CEO of Anything, also stated that thousands of applications have been released to the App Store using the tool since its launch.\\n\\n## **Behind the Surge in Quantity: Quality Concerns Emerge**\\n\\nThe rapid expansion in the number of applications has not necessarily led to a corresponding improvement in overall quality.\\n\\nConcerns are mounting among developers and consumers about the influx of low-quality applications into the App Store. The accumulation of a large volume of low-quality content makes it more difficult for users to discover high-quality applications.\\n\\nMatthew Cassinelli, a consultant focused on helping developers integrate Apple's AI tools, noted: "The number of applications has increased significantly, but the time users have available each day does not increase. Most people will actually only consistently use a handful of applications."\\n\\nThe dramatic nature of this new application surge is particularly striking within its historical context. Analysts point out that the preceding years of stagnation stemmed from the continuous rise in the cost of developing high-quality applications before the advent of vibe coding tools, as well as the exclusionary pressure on small and medium-sized developers from the monopolistic practices of large platforms like Meta and ByteDance.\\n\\nToday, AI tools are leveling the competitive playing field again, but how to strike a balance between quantity expansion and quality assurance will become the core challenge for the next phase of Apple's ecosystem.
