# What can be expected from China's Dental Valley in 10 years?

Editor: Liang Qiuyue

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the establishment of China's Dental Valley. On April 7, the 2026 China Dental Valley Industry Development Conference was held in Ziyang, Sichuan Province. The conference attracted over 600 participants, including academicians and experts in the field of dentistry, industry associations, well-known dental enterprises, financial institutions, and representatives from local governments, to jointly outline a new path for the high-quality development of China's dental industry.

Why does this prefecture-level city in central Sichuan focus on such a highly specialized and segmented industrial market? To understand this, we need to turn the clock back ten years. In 2016, the Sichuan Provincial Party Committee and Provincial Government decided to establish a dental equipment and materials industrial base in the Ziyang High-tech Zone, thus giving birth to "China Dental Valley."

In fact, this seemingly "creating something out of nothing" regional layout is backed by three factors. First is the proactive embrace of industry opportunities. For a long time, China's dental medical device industry has lagged behind foreign countries, with imported brands once occupying over 80% of the domestic market share, leading to difficulties and high costs for the general public in accessing dental care. To break this deadlock, Sichuan foresightedly chose Ziyang, aiming to establish a global dental industry chain ecosystem and create a "Silicon Valley" for dentistry in China.

With a provincial-level strategic backing, the prestigious "West China" brand provides a technological engine for the dental valley's industry. As China's first dental specialty hospital, "West China Dental" collaborates with Ziyang through strategic agreements, special funds, and platform co-construction to empower the entire chain of innovation from basic research to industrialization in the dental valley. Data shows that the dental valley has accumulated 155 high-value invention patents. As Han Xianglong, the director of West China Hospital of Stomatology at Sichuan University, stated, "By establishing a series of interactive mechanisms such as 'ranking and leadership,' we can bridge the 'last mile' between dental research and industrial development, truly achieving the integration of science and production."

Geographical advantages are the core hardware foundation for urban development. Ziyang is located at the center of the Chengdu-Chongqing dual-core area and is an important part of the Chengdu metropolitan area. It is only 18 kilometers away from Tianfu International Airport, with a developed air, rail, and public transport network that efficiently connects global industrial resources. In addition, various flexible services support the "Dental Valley speed." Ziyang has established the only national medical device examination center service station in prefecture-level cities, creating a complete inspection and testing alliance, establishing a drug and device application service center, and launching various online service platforms such as "Zikuaiban," allowing enterprises to focus on production with peace of mind.

Data is the best proof. After ten years of development, this 6 square kilometer piece of fertile land has gathered 15 global dental leaders, including Aiqi, Yingweida, and NSK, and has 146 domestic and foreign upstream and downstream enterprises, obtaining over 400 product registration certificates. The "Ziyang-made" products are exported to more than 100 countries, with an expected output value of 4.5 billion yuan by 2025. Notably, the export value of dental medical devices ranks first in Sichuan Province, with the annual production of invisible aligners accounting for about one-eighth of the global total, and the production of intraoral scanners accounting for about 40% of the national total, making it the largest production base for invisible aligners in the world and the largest production base for intraoral scanners in the country Currently, the global oral industry is entering a golden period of development. The "2025-2031 China Medical Oral Materials Industry Market Deep Research and Development Trend Forecast Report" shows that in 2023, the global medical oral materials industry market has reached USD 25.1 billion, and by 2028, the scale is expected to grow to USD 42.1 billion, demonstrating strong development potential. On the other hand, with the improvement of residents' living standards in our country, awareness of oral health has significantly increased, coupled with the acceleration of the aging process, the demand for oral materials in our country is increasing day by day. It is expected that by 2030, the domestic oral medical service market will exceed RMB 430 billion.

Across the country, cities officially announcing the development of the oral industry include not only Ziyang but also Foshan in Guangdong, Changzhou in Jiangsu, Duchang in Jiangxi, and Daxing in Beijing. For example, Foshan announced in 2024 that the construction of the "Southern Dental Valley" has officially started, aiming to create a world-class distribution center for dental products; Wuxi in Jiangsu aims to strengthen the digital oral medical device industry cluster... It can be said that these cities, whether in terms of geographical advantages or industrial foundations, each have their own focus, collectively building the urban map of China's oral industry.

Standing at the forefront of global oral industry development, with traditional international dental hubs like Cologne, Chicago, and Osaka ahead, and local regional "emerging competitors" behind, what can we expect in the next decade for China's Dental Valley? It is worth noting that at the industry conference, Ziyang's Deputy Mayor Liu Jianhua promoted the next steps for China's Dental Valley with the determination of "second entrepreneurship," focusing on "four focuses and four efforts," striving to build a hundred billion industrial cluster and vigorously establish a world-renowned intelligent manufacturing base for oral medical devices and a comprehensive oral health industry base.

"Oral intelligent manufacturing" is undoubtedly the key to Ziyang's next breakthrough in the oral industry track.
