# Energy Chokepoint "Unfreezes"! Qatar's LNG Giant Resumes Maintenance, Production May Restart Within Days

A Middle East ceasefire agreement offers a glimmer of hope for the tight global natural gas supply. Qatar is mobilizing engineers and workers to prepare for the restart of production at the world's largest liquefied natural gas export facility, with some capacity expected to resume within days.

According to Bloomberg, as the security situation improves, the Ras Laffan facility has initiated necessary maintenance work in preparation for a planned restart.

**Some production may gradually resume in the coming days, but the pace of capacity ramp-up remains unclear. It is worth noting that any large-scale output recovery depends on vessels being able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz smoothly.**

The Ras Laffan facility has been offline since early March, directly leading to a global natural gas supply shortage. This shutdown, coupled with physical damage from a missile attack last month, has cast doubt on the market's expectations for the medium-to-long-term recovery of Qatar's export capacity. The progress of the facility's restart and the navigation status of the Strait of Hormuz are key indicators for investors to observe.

## **Facility Offline for Over a Month, Global Gas Supply Under Pressure**

The Ras Laffan facility is the world's largest LNG export facility by capacity, with an annual output of 77 million tons. The facility has been completely shut down since early March, causing a significant tightening of global natural gas supply.

In addition to the pressure from the shutdown, the facility was also hit by a missile attack last month. The associated damage has impacted approximately 17% of Qatar's annual export capacity, with repair periods estimated to last up to five years. This blow has further complicated the prospects for the facility's full return to normal operations.

## **Ceasefire Opens Restart Window, Strait of Hormuz Remains a Key Variable**

The implementation of the Middle East ceasefire agreement has provided a crucial prerequisite for the facility's restart. Improved security conditions have allowed limited work activities to commence, and relevant maintenance procedures have already been initiated.

Some production units are expected to resume output within days, but there is currently no clear timeline for when overall capacity will significantly rebound.

Even if the facility successfully completes maintenance and restarts production, its ability to achieve large-scale exports still depends on the unimpeded flow of transport channels.

This means there is still a threshold of uncertainty between the physical restart of the facility and the substantive recovery of export capacity. Market expectations for Qatar's supply return will continue to adjust with the evolving situation in the Strait of Hormuz.
