# Wang Qinghong: The full-chain ESG reshapes corporate governance, needing to be shattered and recombined like "Nezha"

\[Global Network Finance Reporter Tian Gang\] "Currently, it is urgent for China and Germany to work more closely together. Germany, as a representative of Europe, and China, as a representative of the East, should become benchmarks and leaders in the field of unifying social value and economic value, setting an example for the world." Recently, during the "2026 'China-Germany Enterprises Discuss the Future' Series First Salon," which was initiated by the International Business Office of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, and for which Global Network was responsible for media promotion, Dr. Wang Qinghong, Executive Director of the China-Europe Charity Innovation Research Center at Peking University and Co-founder and President of the East-West Charity Forum, stated in an interview with Global Network: "Global climate governance, industrial chain restructuring, and consensus on social responsibility are accelerating. China and Germany are highly complementary in green transformation, technological innovation, talent cultivation, and public welfare practices. German enterprises have mature ESG systems, rigorous standards, and rich governance experience; China has unique advantages in digitalization, new energy applications, large-scale implementation, and technological iteration. There is vast room for mutual learning, and both sides can jointly create a sustainable development paradigm for the world."

Regarding the integration path of China-Germany ESG and charity innovation, Wang Qinghong elaborated on the core concepts using three sets of keywords:

**First is "learning from the virtuous and seeking common ground while reserving differences."** Wang Qinghong believes that German enterprises are in a leading position in ESG practice, having accumulated rich experience that Chinese enterprises can learn from; however, it is also necessary to note that China has its unique national conditions and development characteristics, and one cannot simply apply German standards to replace Chinese standards. Instead, it is essential to explore an ESG development path that meets China's actual needs, ideally promoting the establishment of a standard system that both China and Europe can mutually certify and adhere to.

**Second is "transforming fundamentally and working diligently for a long time."** "In the past, many people involved in ESG thought it was just a show or a form of advertising—objectively, there were indeed such situations, but I believe that era has passed. We have now entered a new period of full integration and genetic reshaping," Wang Qinghong proposed: "We must start from the company's overall management system and position settings."

Taking the establishment of Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) in European companies as an example, Wang Qinghong suggested that enterprises need to start with top-level design and gradually achieve full-chain ESG management, embedding ESG concepts and standards into various management lines of the enterprise, making them a genetic component that ultimately integrates into the core of organizational culture. He also vividly compared it to: "This requires not only learning but also determination and tremendous effort, even requiring the company's management system and chain to be shattered like Nezha—then reconstructed according to new standards."

**Third is "adapting to local conditions and integrating education with innovation."** Wang Qinghong believes: "The core of adapting to local conditions lies in localization, which requires not only the localization of products but also a local talent reserve and training system, meaning that entrepreneurship and education must be deeply integrated." In the face of the increasingly strong overseas demand from Chinese enterprises, Wang Qinghong emphasized the necessity of consciously combining corporate overseas expansion with public welfare overseas expansion He stated: "This combination is crucial and indispensable. Only by organically combining economic benefits with social benefits can we truly help Chinese enterprises establish a good overseas image, win the hearts of people abroad, and ensure a steady and far-reaching path for Chinese enterprises going global."

In this regard, Wang Qinghong suggested that capable Chinese enterprises could actively explore overseas public welfare layouts, perhaps by establishing foundations locally or by funding local universities to set up dedicated research institutions and public welfare projects, using public welfare as a bond to build a bridge for mutual learning between Chinese and European civilizations. He further explained with examples: "The Giovanni Agnelli Foundation in Italy donated to Peking University in 2024 to support the establishment of the 'Agnelli Chair of Italian Civilization,' effectively promoting exchanges and interactions in education, technology, and culture between China and Italy; similarly, Chinese enterprises could engage in donations in Europe, funding universities to establish endowed professorships and scholarships, using public welfare as a bridge to promote mutual learning of civilizations, fulfilling social responsibilities while enhancing brand recognition and long-term competitiveness."

Additionally, Wang Qinghong mentioned that Germany's technical talent training model is quite distinctive, known as the "dual system" of higher technical education—this model fosters a positive interaction and close cooperation between enterprises and universities, allowing students to accumulate practical work experience while helping them obtain higher education qualifications and degrees, which undoubtedly deserves in-depth study, active reference, and consideration for introduction in China.

Looking to the future, Wang Qinghong called for China and Germany to base their cooperation on the concept of a community with a shared future for mankind, using ESG as a lever and charitable innovation as a link to deepen comprehensive cooperation in technology, standards, talent, and public welfare. He emphasized the importance of telling the story of sustainable development between China and Germany, contributing Eastern wisdom and European experience to global efforts in addressing climate change and promoting fair and inclusive development, making business benevolence and social benefits the mainstream values of multinational cooperation
