# New Federal Reserve News Agency: March core CPI slightly below expectations, but energy shocks still ahead

"Federal Reserve's megaphone" Nick Timiraos stated that the U.S. core CPI increased by 0.196% month-on-month in March, slightly below expectations. However, single-month data is insufficient to change the overall judgment. The Federal Reserve hopes to see a decline in energy prices and build more confidence in the end of the tariff transmission effect. Notably, more energy-related impacts (such as airfare and transportation prices) may still be ahead.

Data released by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics on Friday showed that the CPI rose by 0.9% month-on-month in March, the largest single-month increase since June 2022, with a year-on-year acceleration to 3.3%, the highest level since 2024. Gasoline prices recorded the largest single-month increase since records began in 1967, contributing nearly three-quarters of the monthly increase.

**Core CPI rose by 0.2%, lower than the expected 0.3%, providing some comfort to the market, with short-term rate cut bets increasing**. However, economists warn that **the secondary effects of energy shocks have not yet been fully reflected in core inflation, and April data faces further upward risks**.

High-priced aviation fuel will push up airfare, and Delta Air Lines has issued a warning regarding this; rising diesel costs will be transmitted to road transportation, thereby increasing consumer goods prices; rising fertilizer prices are expected to elevate grocery bills; the United States Postal Service has also warned of upcoming fee increases.
